I agree, I got Goodyear and pirelli part worns in the past. With 4 to 5mm thread.
New versions cost £120+ per tyre. Partworns for half of the thread cost me £35.0 -

Part worn are no worse than economy tyres - if you buy from a decent supplier who has some morals on fitting safe tyres onto cars. Having said that, I've driven old cars all my driving life, and I've always fitted new tyres when they've needed doing. The tyre place I go to is a small local independant that doesn't do part worn, but i trust them.
If the MOT has issued an advisory on tyres, why not sell it with the old tyres on (if they remain legal until selling), rather than changing them now, and let webuyanycar worry about that.
They won't remain legal until selling, they're already very very close and I can't sell my car until the summer when my insurance will come (I'm in my early twenties) down as the car I'm driving at the moment, I'm only driving because its cheap to insure and I thoroughly hate the car, thus I'm stuck with it for a few months yet.0 -

Though obviously because that was mates rates, it given me no indication to how much part worns usually are, which was my original question, not whether you would do it or not......
I have no idea how much they cost, plenty of signs about saying part worn types from £10.
I have heard all the arguments above before. I take the view that if the law requires used tyres to be tested and marked as part worn, and the trader is not doing this they are of dubious quality. But heck who cares, you go ahead. The worst that can happen is that you kill yourself or someone else.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

Just thought I'd update, I have now bought 2 continental tyres, both with 6mm tread for the grand total of £50 and they're in very good condition.0

Lot of part worns come over from Germany.... Few years back they were between 6 and 7 Euros a piece for branded stuff such as Conti's or Michelin.... Could go and pick what you wanted as you loaded or send them what you wanted and they loaded it. Obviously theres stuff from breakers etc resold. And even stuff that's been removed at tyre bays resold.0

Hi everyone
We spoke to the ABI (Association of British Insurers) today to ask them about whether fitting part worn tyres invalidates your insurance policy, here is what they had to say:
“Customers buying part-worn tyres should check them thoroughly before the vehicle is used. All motor insurance policies require the policy-holder to keep the vehicle in a road-worthy condition, so maintaining your tyres to a good standard is very important. If an accident investigator finds that your tyres are excessively worn, under-inflated or damaged, and they are the cause of an accident, your insurer may refuse to pay out.“, said Scott Pendry.0
