    Eh?
90% of all the miles you've driven have been on part-worn tyres...

A bit of a giveaway is that part worn tyres must be permanently marked in letters at least 4mm high in upper case alongside each approval mark. It's illegal to supply tyres without this marking.

I've never seen one marked like that, is it just me or is that law pretty much ignored?

I bought two Goodyear nct's for £60 and they were brand new from the part worn place. The fitter tested them both before putting them onto my wheels- extremely happy and would use them again.

If you were unaware of the requirement, would you have looked for it?

I've just swapped the tyres on my car from winter ones back to the normal ones which are part worn as they were used last year.

As long as you're getting them from a reputable dealer they should be fine. I wouldn't personally use them but in the circumstances given it seems fair enough.

They are not part worn, they are simply used tyres. Part Worn is a legal term.

Nope, I wouldn't have looked for it but I expect I'd have noticed it if it was there.

The Auto Express link above says that out of 50 part worns they bought only 1 had the required "part worn" marking, as I've bought less than 50 since1994 it's not surprising I've never had a marked one

I'll stick with "that law is pretty much ignored" more so because I can't even think of a way of doing it that is going to be permanent and doesn't involve heat

Had 4 part-worns fitted yesterday. All 4 had tread depths between 6-8mm. None had the 'part-worn' mark on. They came from a multi-site operation and the total cost was £100 with fitting and balancing.

I can also tell you that I know for a fact that in my home town there are a large number of BMWs, Mercs & Jags who's owners fit part-worns.

Better an undamaged, tested, part-worn Pirelli on a Jag than a shiny new Wanli or their ilk.

I don't know anyone who would put Pirelli's on a jag these days (I know they are standard dealer fit, doesn't make them good though). I use Khumo's on my cats, great tyres for the money and way better than Pirelli's (in my experience).
