How much can I expect to pay for part worn tyres?

I need 2 15" tyres as my front ones were advisory on my MOT, but as I'm selling my car in July, I don't want to pay for 2 brand new tyres (just tyres as I know someone who will fit them for free) so how much roughly can I expect to pay for 2 part worn?

I found the website https://www.partworntyres.co.uk which have the size I need for £12.50 each but no pictures of the actual tyres, just standard stock photos. That seems slightly dodgy to me.

Scrapyard is the way to go, ideally you'll get them on the correct wheels too.

:rotfl::rotfl:@ the lack of specific photos, how much selling do you expect on something that only costs £12?

You wont get pictures of the actual tyres as stocks will change many times daily.

You need to be aware that the tyres could be from an accident damaged car.

  • 2 tyres for 15" alloys will only be about £35 each. Stick two new tyres on and it would be a good selling point when you come to sell.

If a car i was buying had an advisory for two front tyres, I would wonder what else had been skimped on and wonder why you hadn't got some new ones fitted as they are so cheap and would negociate the price accordingly to take into account I would need two new tyres for it anyway.

I'm only selling through webuyanycar as I need a quick sale as I can get £3000 for my car, and I only want to spend £1500 on a new to me car so tyres aren't really an aspect of that anyway, but thanks.

I'll do some research on scrap yards, does anyone think the website sounds dodgy?

I would never put part worn tyres on my car, I take it you will be informing your insurance company about having part worn tyres?

Why, it's not a notifiable modification? So long as the tyres are inspected for damage inside and out prior to fitting there's no problem with them.
  • If money was tight I'd rather have good quality part-worn tyres than new El cheapo ditchefinderes

I'd have no qualms about buying them from a reputable dealer but bear in mind you'll likely only get 1-2 mm of usable tread. Part worns are usuall imported en masse from Germany etc where different laws apply and perhaps motorists are more conscious of tyre safety in bad whether etc. It does mean we're becoming the dumping ground of Europe for tyres that will be replaced in a few months. But if you're selling the car to a web buyer, why not - you won't see any benefit in putting new ones on.

There are bargains to be had in part-worn winter tyres.

We haven't had a particularly bad winter (yet) for snow, and the 2nd hand dealers have plenty old winters brought in from Germany and especially Austria where the minimum legal tread-depth for a winter tyre is 4mm.

Winter tyres have 2 distinct tread wear indicator bars - one at the usual 1.6mm and a 2nd one at 4mm.

Just be sure to check the date code.

That's another reason the dealers want shot of them quick, rather than keep them for next winter.

flashg67 is right - the UK is the dumping ground for all types of tyre (including outdated technology new ones from the Land of Chopsticks) for customers to whom the price is more important than the safety aspect.

Many insurance companies required you to declare part worn tyres. There is a problem with them, they haven't been worn on that particular car. As a mechanic I would never put a part worn tyre on any car, I am not a cowboy, I value my customers and I don't want to cause their car to suffer problems because they have a pair of part worn tyres.
