If it's built in to the car, will it be much use?0

If an insurer arranges for a salvage company to collect the car, they will usually pay scrap value by weight, so find out who is collecting the car (so you know the right firm is about to load it and cart it away), then phone them up and enquire as to how much they would give you for it (don't let them know who you are, or this will give the game away). Wait until they contact you to let you know when they will be collecting the vehicle (if from your home) or wait for a couple of days, then phone them up and offer them scrap value + £20 to not collect it.Never Knowingly Understood.

That is absolute rubbish and would never work. There is a difference between scrap value and salvage value. Salvage value is over and above scrap. A car which has suffered enough damage to be classified as a Cat C/D will still have some value considerable higher than scrap.
Take a look here and see how much some accident damaged cars go for:

There is no way salvage plus £20 would secure an accident damaged car.0 -
As above, unless its a classic or very rare car the deal most insurers have is a simple percentage of the settlement amount and is nothing at all to do with weight.
To the reopener of the thread, you have the three choices. You either talk to the assessor about removing it and see if the reduction in settlement is acceptable or not or you speak to the scrap company about buying it from them or you steal it from the car and hope no one spots it0
