CD Player in Car that will be written off
Unfortunately had an accident yesterday. Called the insurance and told them what had happened and they said that my car will more than likely be written off.
My excess of £650 is likely to wipe out an value of the car (It's worth about £1250 going by ebay sales) but will be valued by the insurance companies engineer which will inevitably come back at £650 knowing my luck!
Am I allowed to get my CD player out? It cost quite a bit. Also I had 2 new tyres, brake disks and pads last month at a cost of £300 - I doubt there is anything I can do about this?

Keep your cd player. Use the money spent recently to support a higher payout.0

Buy the car back from them. Sell the parts worth something and scrap the rest.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

How does that work? Do I just tell them what I have had done then sent a copy of the receipt?0 -

If the insurance write it off they pay you out and the car belongs to them, If you start stripping parts off it then they may reduce the payout.
If its your insurance they may start asking questions about the stereo. Was it a standard fitment one? Or aftermarket? Did you declare that to them?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Where's the car?
If you can get to it just swap the CD player for something cheap and cheerful from the scrapyardChange is inevitable, except from a vending machine.0 -
from what you say it is an after market cd player that you fitted and if that is the case do you have the original unit?
if so get to the car and swap them, even if you dont have the original unit then take your CD unit out and say nothing
as for the other parts the only way to get them off is to get a decision off the insurance company and then ask what the buy back value is of the scrap car, if it is low enough then offer to buy the car back off the insurance strip it for spares sell them on line and then scrap what is left unsold0 -
If you have the OEM stereo somewhere, make sure you put it back in. I got £50 extra by giving them the factory tape deck.0

remove stereo and chuck any old thing in its place. remove all personal items and MODS that may have made to the car, inc parcel shelf 6x9's.
induction kits, stickers, alloys aftermarket anything remove it.0 -
Take out anything that isn't nailed down and wasn't on the car when it left the factory. The scrap yard people probably won't care anyway.
When my old Subaru Legacy was written off, the whole audio system cam out and I threw a Volvo OEM tape deck from a 940 in there, didn't even bother to bolt it in as it didn't fit anyway. They just wrote "OEM tape deck" on the form. I also took back my Optima battery and replaced it with a dead one from a different car and extracted the contents of the fuel tank.
Only regret I have is I forgot to take off the clear side repeaters it had and put the originals back, still got the originals in a box somewhere!
One last thing that is even more important: Take the tax disc out! Depending on the engine size and when it was taxed there could be £200 worth of tax right there.0
