Where's best to get moving boxes?

I'm debating whether i have to buy moving boxes, do supermarkets still give them away (or anywhere else?) are the ones you buy better?...

do removal people 'give/loan' you boxes?

  • Our local Tesco does give away boxes, or you can always try to ask on freecycle or freegle.
    Good luck
  • Go ask nicely in your local shop.

Get archive boxes from stationery suppliers or cash and carry.

They come flat-packed, they're designed to take heavy loads, will stack easily and when you're done, flatten them and keep them for the next move.

Archive boxes are brilliant for moving (except the cheapo ones from Argos which are completely rubbish). My work often gives these away, which makes them even better :)
  • When we moved I collected boxes from local shops, offlicenses and supermarkets.

If you are doing the lifting during the move yourself, I recommend wine boxes as they are small and strong. Don't get big boxes as they will be heavy. Just get a few larger ones for light items such as clothes
  • Our Tesco let us use some home delivery crates as we are regular customers they were very useful for heavy stuff.

Go and visit some recently-moved larger houses, and ask if their remover is collecting their used boxes. Normally they do, but if the boxes have been used a few times already, the removal co sometimes leaves them for the owner to dispose of. If it's a larger house, getting rid of 200 boxes is a problem, and you could help them out!

Most removal companies will also sell them to you direct.
  • I asked around work, and someone who'd moved recently handed on all the boxes they'd used.

I also managed to get some really big heavy duty ones that some computer equipment got delivered in from the gent who does the office security.

So might be a good idea to spread the word around friends. relatives and colleagues - once moved, most people are happy for you to take them off their hands.
  • Look on your freecycle or stick a wanted ad there
There's usually loads there for free
So many glitches, so little time...
  • I went & pleaded with my local ASDA - and was sorted not just the spirits cases (double ply corrugated cardboard & small enough to lift even when full of books) but also their George at ASDA clothing boxes which were even more robust & bigger.

I also asked at my local offlicence for spirits boxes - they had more just after Christmas, so timing helps.

If you know anyone in the IT sector who installs printers, copiers, sverer & the like? Very Big cardboard boxes. Commodious den for small child scale. (Very useful if you have small child & do not want them underfoot.)

A mate with an estate to collect the booty, and a pal with access to a stationery cuboard to sort you thick black felt tips & broad brown sellotape to reconstitute and seal boxes are also godsends.
