Dishwasher House Fire

  • Do the instructions say it should be left in "standby mode"?

By "standby" I mean that it was on at the plug, but not actually working....the same way that I assume most people leave most appliances when not in use (tvs, washing machines, coffee machines, etc).

You should discuss the dishwasher issue with the fire brigade.

    Can you elaborate?

Although compensation is a dirty word on this forum I'd certainly try and get some if the Dishwasher is to blame.

Two drawers? It's not a Fisher & Paykel is it?
That's what I have - I'd like to know if I should be switching off at the wall, please! I do have working smoke alarms, but even so!

If it is a F&P I would just point out that the two-drawer dishwasher isn't a new design - we've had ours for about ten years with no problems. I would choose the same again, unless some dreadful unfixable fault comes to light.

    No, it's obvious .
  • I know someome who had the exactly the same issue happen to them just a few months ago - but they had left the dishwasher actually operating whilst they were away from the house. The manufacturer has accepted liability, as the dishwasher was defective, and they have agreed to cover ALL costs caused by the fire.

I wonder if it was still left to their insurer to pursue them for this?

Your guesses above as to the maker are...good. I would definitely like to reiterate that it hasn't yet been definitively proved that the dishwasher caused the fire.
  • Does the fire brigade get involved in determing the cause of fires if no one has been injured and there is no sign of suspicious activities?

I would have thought that they wouldn't have had enough manpower or resources to investigate every fire that they have to attend.
