The free passport was intended to 'reward' those who had been affected by World War 2 - it wasn't directly related to age as such
A bit of a gimmick really - |I can't see it being changed. though0 -
Wish mine only cost £72.50. Had a UK passport for about 50 years, but because I now live in Italy, it costs £128.00, plus £19.86 for courier fees to renew. We have just renewed 2 in the last few years.
They have just changed from Paris renewal centre to the UK, but price has not gone down.As Manuel says in Fawlty Towers: " I Know Nothing"0 -
My GP always asks for cash for sick notes or signing. I wonder if he declares it"enough is a feast"...old Buddist proverb0

The price actually went down in 2012. It used to be £77.50 which is what my DH's last renewal cost.
I have two passports (dual citizen) and renewal costs between them are over £200. Still a bargain for a document I choose to keep renewed. Skipping one meal out per year more than covers the cost.0 -
When did renewing a passport become so expensive? Mine is out of date in another month, and I couldn't believe the price.
Make sure you use the .gov.uk site if renewing online;)

Again, a choice to live in Italy.
Why not apply for italian nationality given its now your home and get an italian passport instead?0 -
I've just done a search of my accounts and discovered that I paid £18 for a passport in 1997, but that had gone up to £66 in 2007. According to this inflation calculator the 1997 price would equate to £27.76 today, so there must be a lot of money going somewhere now that it wasn't then.0

As explained above, a decision was made to fund consular services through a levy on passport fees rather than from general taxation.0 -
