Not helpful but - 3.1 was much better than 3.0

And 3.11 even had some networking built in!

So what do you recommend if you're still a Vista user?...

I believe Vista is supported until 2017, so on that basis you don't need to do anything. Leave it a few years and see what's on offer then.

Or get Windows 7 as a vast improvement over Vista! (if you can any more?)
    Friendly greeting!

Is the switchable graphics working with 8.1 yet?

Spent a fair few hours going from 8 to 8.1 back in November only to discover that I was stuck on the Intel chipset graphics and unable to select the applications to switch to use the ATI 3D graphics chipset.

What's more the update changed the recovery partition. Getting back to Windows 8 involved one reinstallation (another fair few hours) from the recovery partition only to discover the I still had 8.1 and then a marathon reinstall (even more than a fair few hours) from recovery dvds which luckily I made as soon as I aquired the new laptop.

Needless to say I was lamenting the demise of my WindowsXP machine which you could factory reset in less than an hour and determined never to upgrade Windows8 to 8.1 again until I fully researched the consequences.

I know there is a trick that can be used with a Windows 8 'Upgrade' Product Key to fool Microsoft's systems into give you an ISO for 8.1, but I've not seen one that works with the Product Keys from a PC which came with Windows 8 pre-installed?
But as far as I know, the trick above won't download the 8.1 ISO with the Product Key from a PC with Windows 8 pre-installed.

I wouldn't know about that, I bought my Windows 8 for £14.99 so have a proper key.

Sounds like an issue for your manufacturer, not Microsoft...
  • For myself - being very much into my technology each upgrade does bring noticeable improvements and it is a little annoying to hear people saying "windows 8 is rubbish" and windows 8.1 despite taking so long to install (it really should come with a proper "this may take hours" warning) has given a lot of people what they wanted. I mean wasn't everybody moaning about where the start button went - now it's back and everybody is still moaning!
