There is a 14 day waiver on displaying the new disc once you have paid, was extended from 5 to 14 in 2013 to let the DVLA use even cheaper post. https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/.../ved_administration.pdf.pdf
As you so rightly say, the DVLA could issue a fine at 00:00:00.01 on 1st of March, but I doubt if they can move that fast, and the OP will have paid the tax on the 1st anyway.
However, the DVLA do have a habit of making up their own laws so anything can happen
Safest is to declare it SORN and walk everywhere.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The 14 day grace period for displaying the licence would only be valid if the new licence was applied for on or before 28th February.0 -

I won't wait for an apology, but just assume I'm not completely stupid.
.
You posted that it expired on the 27th. We all knew it expired on the 28th since ALL tax discs expire on the last day of the month. Hence my fake comment
.
Pay online on the 28th and you have nothing at all to worry about.0
