    Cheers Ivan.

I've called Domestic and general and cancelled the warranty, so will now take it up directly with Hotpoint for a replacement!

I hope this one is just a 'lemon' and that the next one runs smoothly. Wish me luck.

Just an update. After the banging episode, the next wash was fine..... Now the banging is back again, so called up explained that although the machine is 13 months old, I need it fixed.

The lady said they'd send an engineer out to 'inspect' the machine, and then they will decide if they will repair or replace it. So fingers crossed they just replace it so I can move on! Ugh. Never again.

Charlene, have a look on this thread, and read the responses by myself and others re. the Sale of Goods Act.

    Same applies in your case.

You shouldn't have to rely on their goodwill or their interpretation of the warranty - you have statutory rights. As zorber says above, the warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on.

By the way, if you purchased it from 24-7 Electricals, you should be pursuing them as the retailer is liable under the Sale of Goods Act, not the manufacturer (regardless of if they got the manufacturer to deliver it directly).

Thank you Taxiphil, am off to read that thread now.

I've been trying to locate the original receipt, but can't find it anywhere! It's around somewhere though.

My Hotpoint dryer is 2 1/2 years old, and they've been out to it 14 times!

The last time, the engineer said it was a "write-off" and removed the moulded plug.

A couple of weeks later, I had a call to say it was being repaired!

It had a new drum & associated parts, belt, motor, side panels, back panel, timer and cable. I think I was left with the old base, top and front.

It's previously had 3 new doors, a couple of timers, a motor, a drum. I could go on and on.

And the timer's now broken AGAIN!!

Oh my word! Did they do all the repairs free of charge with no hassle?

the extra insurance they sell us is not worth the paper its written on, surely rather than paying for the extra extended warentee your better off putting the money assisde and when it breaks down after 1 year cover then just go buy a new one?

The standard question to ask when they try and flog one of these warranties is "Are you saying that this machine is going to break down in a year's time? " If the answer is "yes" then say you won't buy it. If the answer is "no" then tell them the warranty is not needed.

I've never bought one of these warranties before or since, but when we bought our dryer, we got the warranty for a tenner. And everything we've had done to it has been covered.

I must have tempted fate with my earlier post because our washing machine went Kaput on Friday. After a slow start (namely DW had to tell me which white box was the washing machine .. how the heck should I know .. why do you think I got married), I poked it, prodded it, tapped it, kicked it, turned it off and on a few times but it still did not work (do I look like someone who knows how to fix washing machines).

Anyhoos we went out to buy a new one and selected another Hotpoint that was on offer (the old one gave us nearly 12 years of good service .. apart from the 'spider'). The chap tried to sell me extended warranty which I politely declined ... he tried pushing extended wearranty so I told him I thought that I was suitably protected under SoG Act ... he tried saying it was a very grey area and that 65% plus of their call outs are for washing machines ... I pointed out to him that he was only willing to offer me 3 years of extended warranty whereas the SoG should cover me for 5 years (which was his figure for the average lifespan of a modern day appliance).

    We will see

    Ivan
