Can someone clarify; if someone finds a duplicate post then are they are the ones that should request the merge, rather than just providing the link and saying merge needs to be done.

Years ago I did the above a few times until other MSErs pointed out that I was the one that should request the merge, which I always do now. Maybe things have changed in the intervening period.

I understand if people are going offline and haven't got time but want to let others know it is a duplicate but would welcome some clarification on this.

Thank you

there are a few people who have their pm's turned off and therefore do not send any merge requests, so if they see a dupe they will post and ask for someone else to send the merge pm to a BG

  • Personally, I think that's slightly unfair to all those whose PMs are on; if we all had our PMs turned off the Board would be in a hell of a state!

But on the other hand if people kept getting abusive pms and couldn't turn them off then they would be in a hell of a state.

  • Yes I guess you're right there Blulu.

The reason I brought this up though is I'm all for fairness in all aspects of life and this issue seemed unfair to me.

It's a shame the website can't be set up so they can send PMs but not receive them.

Send to abuse and block, problem sorted, It's only a problem if you let it be one.

I can understand people having their PMs turned off, but it annoys me when they can't even be bothered to ask politely for someone else to do it. Please is just 6 letters, nobody is so busy that they haven't got time to do that.

  • I would much rather have it known that the post was a dupe than not. I couldn't care less how it's said, as long as it's said.

True - however Glad did mention a while back that it's possible to adjust PM settings so that an MSE'er can stop people PM'ing them (if they've had abusive PM's) but can still send PMs (e.g. for merges)

I'll see if I can find the thread...

Update - Glad's post is here
