Now I have the nice big label, things are a bit clearer.

The necklace actually cost $45 (£26.97 at today's rate 20/2/14) BUT the seller had put a value of $80 on the label!?

The postage was $13.41 or £8.04 at today's rate.

The import VAT was therefore charged at £11.27 and the RM charge £8 = £19.27

  • Well there you go then. As has been said, RM fee was £8.

Contact the seller and request a partial refund due to their mislabelling causing you additional import costs? :)

  • Or if the seller is unhelpful you can claim the overpayment of VAT back from HMRC, exactly the same thing has happened to me.

Yours too? I thought it was just my nearest depot that did this, I didn't realise that it was RM policy. (The sign advising this looks very Heath Robinson).

pretty costly to add card facilities to DOs when you would then be processing sub £2 charges in the main.

Ignoring the sarcasm, if you insist on everyone being 100% accurate all the time, then I have NOT "got the item which has a nice big label breaking down the charges" , I have the 'Royal Mail card' [see earlier post]...stating that the item could not be delivered due to the outstanding payment due.

When I have collected the item I will be interested to read a breakdown of the charges.

Not that the item had been incorrectly valued by the seller at $80.

So what does your thread add to others cases then?
develop ESP as to what has been declared?
Your thread was 'warning' about a change to RMs fee structure.
    not the case.
    A recent change,not the case.
So we have your thread showing what happens when you do no research before purchasing abroad.

I did not make this purchase.

I buy a great deal from all over the world (mostly from China and South Korea) but use courier services, as I now do domestically.

One of the more interesting and useful comments was from Heliflyguy stating "Or if the seller is unhelpful you can claim the overpayment of VAT back from HMRC, exactly the same thing has happened to me."
