A Rant At Cyclists...

What is your problem? I commute about 16 miles a day on a bike and the number of cyclists i see without helmets is alarming, and from what i can see on the increase.
Because there are several studies showing that use of a cycle helmet is little more than a placebo.
Two of the countries with the highhest rate of use of cycling helmets, the US and the UK, also have the highest rate of serious cycling injuries.
Holland on the other hand has one of the lowest rates of cycling helmet use but you're also 5 times less likely to suffer injury cycling there.
The whole cycling helmet argument is nothing more than a red herring and smokescreen to excuse addressing the real problem with cycling injuries in this country.
Chris Boardman raised exactly these points only yesterday as found here

In short, the use or lack of use of cycling helmets in the UK is NOT the reason so many cyclists get injured and anyone who actually looked into the FACTS behind it would see this rather than just pay attention to the establishments cycling helmet and red light jumping propoganda(none of the 14 deaths in London last year for example were as a result of red light jumpers)0 -
From another cyclist!
Who don't Wear a 'FUDGING CYCLE HELMET'!!!
What is your problem? I commute about 16 miles a day on a bike and the number of cyclists i see without helmets is alarming, and from what i can see on the increase.
I personally don't care if you smash your head on the concrete and put yourself in a 'vegative state' for the rest of your lives, after all you won't know much about it.
But your family and friends who will now have to spend the rest of their lives caring for you...i do care about.
I just don't understand and cannot think of one genuine reason why not to wear one?
I cycle in area, where last year 9 cyclists died in the space of a month. What clearer message do you need that you require all the protection you can get?
Rant over, have a nice day.:)

If you can't see the difference between pedestrians mostly on pavements and cyclists mixing with traffic on roads then you probably don't need a helmet as the damage is already done. Isn't this about adjusting odds? For sure a helmet won't help if a 32 tonne lorry runs over your head nor will a seat belt if the same lorry hits your car full on at 60mph but seat belts do reduce death and serious injury and helmets do prevent some deaths and injuries and make other injuries less serious than they might have been. You may be lazy and/or stupid and not wear one but the argument is more or less unanswerable.
More pedestrians are killed on the pavement by motor vehicles than cyclists on the road. Why shouldn't they take more care and wear helmets?
Is it not reasonable to suggest that drivers take adequate responsibility for their actions and not drive their vehicles into things? So far I've managed not to, mainly be driving carefully and giving vulnerable road-users the space they need.
If you believe everyone who cycles without a helmet to be lazy or stupid please explain the high numbers of cyclists in the Netherlands and the incredibly low number of people wearing helmets.
What is needed is improvements to infrastructure, not helmets. Remove the danger, don't blame the victims. It's only numbers.0 -
I had more crashes when wearing a helmet, than without.
Car versus bike, car will always win. helmet or not.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

The fact remains it only takes one incident to ruin the rest of your life.
I could fall off my bike several times and suffer no consequences, that's not the point, one occasion in the future maybe your undoing.
It may never happen...correct, but is it really worth taking that risk?0 -
It's not a legal requirement to wear a helmet, is it?
Cyclists with no lights or those stupid flashing things are more of a danger to themselves and other road users in the dark.0 -
I like the fact people are comparing the UK and Holland for cycling, it's like comparing the UK and Sierra Leone for child mortality.
I always wear a helmet even when I don't go near roads. But I'm beginning to rethink it when I'm not going on a main road.0 -
I've smashed 3, so I'll always wear one, but it should be people's choice and I don't really care if others do or not.
The dark clothes and no lights at night (ninja cyclists) are become everyone's problem and should be fined/banned.0
