Agencies are ok when you have a small branch network but this isn't the case with Santander after absorbing A&L plus B&B.

They are supposedly considering gobbling up Clydesdale & Yorkshire banks in the next 18 months too.

That would be ironic, the Spanish printing Scots bank notes while their government stabs the Scots in the back re E.U membership.
I have a deep burning indifference

Huh? What makes you think Santander UK would print scottish bank notes? And why would Santander UK's ownership of a minor bank influence Spain's vote on EU accession?

If they bought Clydesdale, they would have the right (indirectly) to print banknotes.

I think the "stabbing the Scots in the back" isn't anything to do with Santander. He seems to be under the delusion that Santander is a Spanish government bank or something.

Santander UK itself is on the list to be floated off. Worth more to Spanish HQ that way.

Surprised there are not more branches going though, I live in a small town and we are now down to 2, the lease ran out on the ex Abbey branch so that closed last year leaving the ex B&B and A&L still going, both of which have had internal re-fits.

Finally happened in our High Street. Two branches merged into one.

Also Britannia finally closed. Now just left with Co-Op.

Clydesdale, RBS and BOS have some sort of legal right to.

It's a primary reason as to why HBOS chose to keep the Bank of Scotland banking licence when they merged Halifax, BoS, Birmingham Midshires and IF in to a sole licence arrangement a year before the Credit Crunch.

There's two next door to each other in my town too, and neither are ever very busy. It was only a matter of time before one would have to close. I'm surprised it's taken so long.
For a while 2 years ago there were 3 Santanders in a parade of 14 shops in Hemel Hempstead.

    There are still 2 now.

Was for a time 3 branches within a stones throw of each other here too. Former Abbey, Alliance and Leicester and Bradford and Bingley branches. The former A&L has now closed and as far as I can see, the only advantage of keeping both the branches we have open now open is that they have different days for staff training when they open late. Other than that, there is zero need for both the branches to be open as customers could quite easily be served by the larger branch
  • They have many branches in London.

For example there are 2 branches in Wood Green about only 4 minutes walk apart on the same road! However both had queues today at around 2!
