It looks like it's more than just duplicate branches in the same town too.

About time too for some branches!
Although I don't like to see anyone lose their job, in my town there are two branches next door to each other. I think they have slightly different functions, but are separate buildings. I know this because when I went in to collect post I'd had sent to the branch, the cashier couldn't find it so went round to the branch next door to see if it had arrived there by mistake!0 -
There's two next door to each other in my town too, and neither are ever very busy. It was only a matter of time before one would have to close. I'm surprised it's taken so long.. . .I did not speak out
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me..

From the article linkedSantander, which has 14million customers in the UK, defended the move, pointing out that the branches being closed are called agencies and are not part of its core network of around 1,000 branches.
Surprised there are not more branches going though, I live in a small town and we are now down to 2, the lease ran out on the ex Abbey branch so that closed last year leaving the ex B&B and A&L still going, both of which have had internal re-fits.0 -
The 139 closures are just the agency outlets. Apparently it would not be cost effective to try and bring the agencies in line with the branch standards, hence the closures.0

Agencies seem to be a thing of the pastProud to be a member of the Anti Enforcement Hobbyist Gang.:D:T0

Agencies are ok when you have a small branch network but this isn't the case with Santander after absorbing A&L plus B&B.
They are supposedly considering gobbling up Clydesdale & Yorkshire banks in the next 18 months too.tommytiger1985 wrote: »The 139 closures are just the agency outlets.
