Why not have a word with the people living on the other side of the petrol station ? They will be able to advise about any nuisance and effect on insurance.
  • I personally wouldn't.

About two years ago, me and hubby saw a house right next to a petrol station. Perfect and price was exceptionally good!
After viewing I looked on the internet to see if there was anything about petrol station and residential houses and some studies have shown some health risks for humans such as cancer and higher risk of miscarriage.

In the end we did not buy it, and very happy with that decision too!

I can't see why it would have any effect on your insurance, any problems caused by the petrol station would have to be covered by their insurance.
  • I suggest stay inside the house in the evening to see if you hear anything about the house...
  • I don't think I would, more for safety reasons and the smell and noise.

Years ago I lived across the road from one (it was across a busy highway), and I used to hear the fuel tankers delivering fuel in the early hours of the morning. But on the positive side, they made the best chicken kebabs, and when I was feeling lazy..... :o

I would rather live next door to a petrol station than next door to a river! I wouldnt be bothered but if you have people round who smoke dont forget to tell them not to flick their tabs over the fence.

I don't think it would bother me overly if I liked the house but I live two doors away from a car dealership so it has no petrol, we do occasionally get alarms going off in the night and hear the mechanics in the yard sometimes.
  • We used to have a flat very near to a petrol station. There were only 2 real sources of noise. Firstly would be the regular deliveries of petrol, a sort of loud humming. Secondly, you would get the occasional driver who doesn't get petrol but pops into the shop but decides to leave passenger with the car stereo blaring away.

Although annoying, they are short lived annoyances. And I did find it handy to pick up milk, bread etc.

Agree with others about checking it out friday nights/weekends in case of youths gathering though. Also ask about insurance, as that might be high.

Having looked at the property, it looks a nice road and I think I would go for it (realise I might be in the minority here though).

It's not unknown for the petrol tanks to leak below ground, and then to spread through the groundwater into neighbouring properties.

Not a common occurrence but my former company made a good living out of re mediating sites either for reselling or new development.

Something may be picked up on searches but worth an enquiry with environmental health as well.
  • Incidentally, the Buncefield Oil Depot explosion (pic posted earlier in this thread) was a Company controlled by TOTAL and Chevron and which was found guilty of a host of grave safety failures.
