If you are around Sainsbury's or Asda they often sell the "Nuage" shaving oil which I find is very good for a close shave without irritation. Usually around £1 for a little pump spray but as you only need about 4 or 5 drops (or a couple of sprays) these last very well. It may seem odd at first because there is no soap to "shave" but if you have a good mirror you can see the stubble being removed. It works as well as the "King of Shaves" stuff but is about 20% of the price of that.

Ive got sensitive skin and make sure I shave in the shower, I use Asdas own gel and have found Gillette disposable razors (not cartridges) last for months, a pack of 5 triple blade disposables have lasted me since December and I shave my head and face regularly. One tip I learnt a while ago, run your razor under the cold tap before use, it tightens the blade

I shave in the shower too, this way I dont get cuts when shaving or at most with a new blade I get a little blood that washes straight off rather than actual cuts and my shave is much closer, I start with a bic disposable which is up to personal preference i.e a single blade one seems to not shave as close but stubble takes longer to come back and a 2 blade one i.e sensitive makes it feel smoother but it doesn't last anywhere near as long, or for a even better shave first use a foam based one with a disposable, then go over it with a larger blade you can replace and use gel this makes my face very smooth.

For the irritation after, Wilkos do something in a silver pack that burns at first but then makes your skin feel good and not irritated, e45 works too but expensive and takes longer to work, baby oil helps if you use it BEFORE you shave i.e when in shower as it softens skin

I still get a little irritation this way though
  • Reading this thread reminds me of my Dad who bought one of those blade sharpening machines called a Rolls Razor. He was convinced that he would never have to buy another blade. The blade itself looked just like a miniature Guillotene and had no guard on it.In order to sharpen the blade one moved the handle back and forth to strop the blade. Guess what he tried it a couple of times and almost slit his jugular!! Gave up and returned to blades.

I have gone full on MSE on shaving & stopped...i have a full beard, which has saved me thousands of pounds (not really)
In the past i used a DE razor & used http://connaughtshaving.com/ for my supplies. They do a Blade Sample pack to find the best blade for your face, which is good.

Costco have regular deals on Multipack blades, I usually grab a years supply when they are on offer, but Costco isn't moneysaving as invariably there will be some additional items I never knew I absolutely needed.
  • I have thick stubble and use Gillette Fusion. I am on my 3rd on this year. Forget that green strip - they work just fine for up to 100 days. I find them 4 for £5 on hotukdeals occasionally. Costs me £5 a year in blades.

My total spend since first growing a beard to keep warm on motorbikes in about 1976 has been about £15 each on 2 hair clippers plus the electricity cost of trimming beard and hair (what is left) on number one every weekend. Wives have many uses. Must have saved a few thousand pounds in the last 38 years. Very MSE. :T

Wife makes up for savings by spending £25/£50 on alternate 6 weekly visits to her stylist depending whether it is cut only or cut and colour. :(

  • ^^^^^ Stopped Shaving mid November this year...... Quite light on top too so I recon a new set of trimmers on the list for this Christmas (Current set are about 12 years old) Will see how it goes but OH loves the beard and I recon I'll save a fortune...... :money::money:
  • I find various shaving club type online things make sense on paper.
I've signed up to one and gone for 5-blade cartidges. So far they're lasting well. It works out at £2 a cartridge, which is cheaper than the gilette fusion (my previous shaving system) and they work at least as well, if not better. Cartridges are posted out monthly (although I've opted for bi-monthly).
  • I started using a DE safety razor last October and much prefer it now I've got the hang of it. Had a few nasty cuts at first!!
My Top Tip is to ask @ Holland & Barrett for some free samples of the Bluebeard's Revenge shaving products.
