What Clio did you have? I was thinking Clio Grande if I went for a Clio.
Just a standard 1.2. The body work was excellent and never showed any sign of rust.
oh the rover bashers have come to town.

the petrol rovers in your budget will come with problems....

...for me rover over a French tat anyday.
So you agree that a decent Rover isn't within the OP's price range?

I just think there are far better cars on the market for what you would need to pay for a decent Rover.

I love Mazdas, but their engines usually far outlast their body work. All cars have niggles and opinion will always be split, but for a first car which will inevitably have a few clips and bumps along the way with a new driver, a Clio is a good option. It's a gateway into learning how to care for a car too as it's relatively easy to maintain and do minor repairs on. If the OP gets 2 years daily use from a car, and learns a few things about basic maintenance along the way, it's all part of the learning curve.

no I agree that rovers are in the OPs budget.

rovers are simple to work on too.
  • Wow thanks everyone I didn't expect all this help haha, well I'm still looking at cars.

There are a number of cars in contention, but been drawn towards Corsa of late. Rovers/Clio a good second option.

You're certainly not going to get a Corsa within the insurance price bracket you're hoping to pay.

I've already checked and it is well within budget, they want £100 a month for the Corsa. I live in a low risk area.

    Are you male or female?

I live in one of the lowest risk areas of the country yet my son paid in excess of £3000 for his first car, a Corsa. I find it hard to believe you can find a policy covering you for £1200. Is this fully comp?

    VW Lupo 1.0E

Cracking first car. Not too fast, very cheap, galvanized and more reliable than your average Corsa, Saxo and Ford Ka.

I agree they're nice cars. We had one in the family that was an 02 reg but by 2012 it started to show some rust bubbles, which made me think it wasn't galvanised.

Anyway, at the £500 quid mark, if you can find one, I wouldn't be worrying about a bit of cosmetic rust.
