Hello was wondering if you could give me some help on buying a decent first car, something I can have for the first year and maybe get rid of.

Budget of around £500 for the car and needs to be around £150 a month insurance max. Thinking of going telematics.

Been looking at Rover 25 and Clio Grande atm but been told too many problems with both.

Help please :)

I'm 21 and passed my test a week ago.

You'll be lucky to find insurance for £150 a month on your first policy. You might find you need to pay at least double that, if not more.

With insurance, beggars can't be choosers.
Find the insurance group you can afford, then find the car.
  • Speak to an insurance broker to find out what the premiums will be because £150pm for a first time driver of 21 will be difficult to find.

No point in buying a car and then finding you can't afford to insure it.

Don't forget about road tax, servicing and keeping a buffer for on-going repairs / tyres etc.

    Motoring is not cheap.

I have already found that with a telematics policy. Just thats for the rover/clio and ideally want a more reliable car.

With a budget of £500 you will be taking pot luck with reliability whatever you buy.

Yeah I understand its not a huge amount but only want the car for the first year to get a NCD hopefully! That 500 is just for the car btw, doesn't include tax and things I have separate pot for that.

Something like a Corolla, Yaris or Micra maybe?
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
  • ford ka or fiesta's are usually cheaper to insure if you just want a run around. Get insurance quotes for the car before you buy it so you know how much the premium will be. If you have a partner or family member who drives put them down as a named driver. Having 1 experienced named driver on the policy often lowers the premium.
  • Fords are generally cheap to repair, with a budget of £500 I think your're better off going for stuff that is cheap to fix above reliability as you are going to be in the lap of the gods for reliability at that price.

Japanese cars tend to be reliable but cost more to fix when they've gone wrong.

If you can find a non rusty KA, Or anything older with a long MOT.

Your not going to be able to pick and choose much on a £500 or less car. Well not if you want something safe to drive.

Insurance groups are not 100% reliable as to what will be cheap to insure. You may find a group 1 insurance car which should be the cheapest. But the company you phone have had a 100% claim rate with owners of that vehicle. So rate it higher.

Small petrol engined vehicle usually. But i did an oddball quote for my daughter. A 1700cc Volvo came out cheaper than a 1000cc Ford KA.

In an accident i would rather she was in the Volvo also.
