Ipad virus.

Options
Hi, hoping someone here can help me. Logged into my halifax account online and noticed a payment had been transferred out (not by me). I have contacted the halifax who have confirmed it is probably fraud and they are refunding me and have temporarily blocked my account. I need to login and reset it but I have been told to do a virus scan first as that is what caused the transfer to happen. Problem is I need to do it on my ipad 3 and after much googling I am struggling to find suitable software to scan the ipad as all that comes up is that iPads don't get viruses! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks on advance. Nic

The only ways to get viruses on iPads are:
    1. To install one via the App Store
    2. To have jailbroken it and then installed something using cydia or similar.

Since Apple only allow software they have checked an approved onto the App Store, then you won't get a virus using 1.
And if you haven't jailbroken it, then it's not option 2.

So, generally, you don't need to worry about getting a virus on an iPad.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
  • Thanks. No it isn't jail broken. Only thing I am worried about is logging back in as halifax said it was caused by a virus. Do you think this is the case? Also I haven't installed any apps recently so don't know how it could have been 'hacked'.

May not be a virus at all and that's just Halifax's standard response.
How secure is your login? Is it just a password, or is other security required? Tell them you've checked for viruses and it's clean, then change your password to something unique and not easily guessable.

  • Standard response from Lloyds Group. Did they tell you how the money was transferred? As in was the money transferred using online banking or mobile banking?
  • Hi. Thanks for both responses.

I login using username and password plus selected letters from a memorable word. I was scammed through a genuine looking screen that appeared when I logged in asking me to update account details and I then authorised a transfer to them, a common scam according to the halifax. I have changed all login details on my laptop. Halifax didn't say how - if it was mobile or online banking.

Just cautious of using my ipad now for any online banking etc how would I know if there is something still on the ipad stealing my details?

    Thanks again

There wasn't anything on the ipad stealing your details.

When you say you were scammed through a "genuine looking screen" do you mean you clicked on a link in an email, rather than going to the Halifax website?

So, you got caught by a phishing email then? Nothing to do with a virus. Best way to reduce the chance of that happening is to NEVER click on a link in an email. Just save your banking login pages as favourites in you browser and go to them that way.

So you clicked on a link in a piece of email and then supplied your login credentials to a site which show the "padlock" symbol?

    You'll know next time, anyway.
  • No I am aware of email phishing scams. I went to my favourites to the saved Halifax login page. Then logged in as usual and the fraudulent screen appeared. I did not even go into my emails
