You are of course correct - it would appear that this is an illegal seller, in that he/she just makes the plates without me showing/proving anything at all.

I actually had the plates (cherished number) made up before I even had bought the car I wanted to put them on.

But I don't think I (as the purchaser) have committed a crime - or have I?
  • I know a motor factors who used to make up plates for garages without having seen the v5 or driving license of the garages customer, needless to say there was an inspection of their number plate machine and software there were many blank fields in the software where you required to enter the license number or v5c number and they just put garage names the plate was made for they also neglected to update the software in which the update prevented the machine printing the plate without the required information, they fined for it but warned they would pace criminal proceedings if they continued to make plates without the v5c ref number and proof of ID.

you can buy the machines on ebay and make back that investment in just a few transactions £1100, the one for my ex employer had bought cost £3k but it wouldnt work without a laptop or PC and the software to print the plate and wouldn't print without the required fields complete with v5c info (and you couldn't manipulate it with random letters and numbers either) as the software was linked to the DVLA portal. we had more trouble with that machine than it was worth, and resorted back to using the old printing machine that didn't need the DVLA portal. but we stayed legal and that's the main thing, still had a the legal aspects covered.

you can buy jigs, but they're only intented use is for show plates.

No, as the purchaser you're not committing any crimes in that scenario, it is the seller who is.
Even if you used the plates, as long as they conform it doesn't matter if you obtained them legally or not.

If you want legal plates with all the markings (he does the legal stuff small) then this guy is reliable and fast.

    Used him a few times.

I've looked up the plate maker's postcode on Google Maps and it's just a residential cul-de-sac in Blaydon-on-Tyne.

Although the plates are made to legal standards, the seller probably isn't even a registered plate maker with the DVlA never mind just not asking to see the V5C.

I'm not complaining though I've I used one of these 'legal' plate sellers before as it beat paying Halfords prices. I think it was possibly that one that got raided :D

i bought an ebay plate. i wouldn't do it again. I dont think I can trust these people to be paying their VAT, doing due dilligence to prevent fraudulent plate purchases.

These very same people could be forging your plates for someone else. They are probably also responsible for supplying petrol stration fraud too.

I've had a couple of plates off eBay

They may well be transgressing a rule or two, in the scheme of things it's relatively minor and I won't lose sleep over it
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

Noticed on his listing it says
THE SUPPLING OUTLET NAME AND POSTCODE IS DISPLAYED IN THE CENTER OF THE PLATE THIS IS 30mm X 4mm (VERY DISCREET)

I assume by this comment that he just orders them from his mate/dealer/supplier with a legal printing press and he is basically just an agent.

I've had show plats on my car for several years and never been "done". I even use a Council MOT station..

When I had them made I had "Ford Motor Co" on the bottom along with the postcode of the factory. No BS markers on them though.

I've bought 'legal' plates from ebay. I've put pressed plates on a late 80's car, white and yellow, and they're legal. I've also had black and silver on a 60's car. All legal to use. To sell, no idea, it's the seller that has the risk. But the price is better.

Is it just me or does having a stylised plate dray your attention to the fact there is an ugly plate on the car. Normal plates just bend in.....

At my old work we produced legal plates only. The software required regular uploads and it would not allow printing if the correct fields were not filled or if the numbers and the letters themselves weren't legal formatting. If you don't send off yours docs its an illegal plate and you have possibly funded an illegal operation that could be stealing fuel and or vehicles. Just go to a local registered factors.
    Back by no demand whatsoever.

Yes, and pay £12 a plate, or £8 for two on ebay, delivered, for the same
