So if all the price crash nerds can come on here spouting crap about how doomed all us home owners are, why shouldn't the OP be allowed to laugh in their face and say "you've not been right so far"...

this post wasn't aimed at you specifically tara, just using your post as an example

So am i allowed to come on here in the future and rub it in that people have lost the roof over their heads and lost everything they own?

You know prices are not sensible today and i dont know why people keep wanting prices to go up and up as they will sometime in the future will need to move up the ladder and that next step will be further and further out of their own reach.

It is all pretty simple to me.House prices, like all commodities are cyclic and most markets over heat.Sooner or later the``sentiment`` will start to go in housing and that`s when the market``corrects``.

I estimate that, for any area of the UK, houses prices will be approximately 200 x the monthly rent of a similar property (IR = 3%-7%).

Works quite nicely with my BTL and, at current value, I would not buy the house for usea as a BTL.

Hmm, something has to change or there will be a generation of people unable to afford housing (sadly probably my children). I know that most people are generally moaning at STRers but if house prices continued to rise at the rate the do, people will end up having to remortgage their properties when they're 50 just to help their kids buy, I'm noticing it's already starting to get that way - and don't get me started on shared ownership, possibly the biggest rip-off of them all! Ideally salaries should catch up, but I guess that's wishful thinking.

To put it into perspective - I was born to a single breadwinner family who earned less than my partner (using avarage salaries to compare) and owned a 3 bed 1930s semi in a small suburb occupied predominantly by young families. My partner and I both work and couldn't afford to purchase said house at its current value despite earning more than double what my father did (taking into account difference in time). And this is without me giving up my job to look after the baby. Unfortunately house prices as they are make it very difficult for young families today (luckily there are many ex-mining villages near us that are still affordable, sadly I still couldn't become a full time housewife/mother with a mortgage).

But with the increasing demand for housing in the UK and not enough supply, I feel any crash would be short lived... but then I don't come on here every day telling people who are renting that they are idiots and should be buying houses.... but people still feel the need to come on here and tell newbies asking for help buying a house that they are idiots and will be on the streets in a year....

So is everyone who buys a HOME (not a house) to LIVE IN (i.e. a roof over their head, somewhere of their own, their own little love nest that they can paint and modify as they please) is a moron?

You sound like a great person, can I be your friend? Do you laugh at people who get cancer or have their children kidnapped too?
  • Maybe part of the problem is women's lib (or equal opps). There was a time when a man's wage would provide for his family. Nowadays, thanks to equal opps, it takes two wages to satisfy a family's needs.

Instead of women having the opportunity to earn a man's wage, they earn half a man's wage with a man earning the other half. It takes two workers to buy a house. The alternative is for one or two non-workers to get a house from the welfare state.

    Just a thought.
