Well that did used to be the case - but Roads Minister Robert Goodwill changed all that to save us all £8 million a year. That was 3 months ago.
Lots of folks are not aware of this and just take all their docs to the PO as before - but they don't need to.

And of course the discs themselves are being done away with in October this year.0 -
I can't see where that link mentions MOTs?0

Fair comment - not specifically mentioned in the article itself - but scroll down to the latest 2 week old comment.
I am 100% sure of the no insurance certificate needed, and pretty sure about the MOT - but I don't have one for my 2 year old car.
Worth checking for MOT though.0 -
This link would suggest that an MOT certificate is needed for renewel in some unspecified circumstances:

That's really interesting Iceweasel thanks for that

I carry mine anyway; if I'm stopped I'd rather show them it at the time and get on with my life than have to take it into a police station later, especially since my local one is closing. But then it doubles as my ID for everything else, anyway.
I can't think of any reason not to carry the photo-card one with you anyway.0 -

You've raised a very good point there Herzlos.
Especially here 'up north'. Police Scotland have just recently announced that many/most smaller police stations will soon have no counter-service / walk-in facilities for the public.
The new key phrase is 'No Public Counter Provision.'
Most of those who stay open will work office hours from nine till five.
Their latest press release has barely featured in the media:
http://www.scotland.police.uk/assets/pdf/174967/189265/police-station-public-counter-opening-hours?view=Standard
It gives the new 'opening hours' for every police station in Scotland.
Outside major cities many folks nearest police station could be 40 to 50 miles away.0 -
Yeah, it's an absolute disgrace. I can't even imagine it'll save that much money, since the smaller ones tend to by Civilian staffed during office hours anyway and it's going to make visiting them for many people a serious problem especially for those that aren't particularly mobile.0

I've carried my photocard with me for the last few years as I kept getting asked for ID in the supermarket.
Never had a problem when I was 18, but since I've been in my thirties....guess this means I haven't aged at all."I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by."0 -

At the grand old age of 54, they insisted on ID in Vegas airport before selling me a beer
