Carry driving licence all the time?

Do I need to carry my original driving licence (card and paper - both parts) with me all the time?

Or is it okay to carry photocopies and keep originals safe at home?

You are meant to carry it when driving to show a copper if requested but in real life few people actually bother.

No, you are not required to carry your driving licence all the time. If requested to provide it to the police you have to do so within a certain period of time (can't remember how many days).

I carry my photocard licence with me all the time in my wallet as it is handy as a general ID and proof of address. My paper counterpart hasn't left my house in years though.

I don't really see any point in carrying photocopies of either part of your licence.

I think you have 7 days to take it to a police station if asked.
Mine's the old paper licence and I keep it at home.

Anyone who needs to see your licence - police, car hire company etc. - isn't going to be interested in a photocopy.

Any school kid could produce a photocopy of Oliver Cromwell's driving licence. LOL.

I carry both parts of mine as I could be called upon to head off to anywhere in Europe at very short notice. But then I carry my passport with me too.

I think the UK is unique in that you can drive around with no ID, Driving Licence, or car documents at all.

In the UK you may be asked to produce your documents at a police station of your choice within 7 days.

If you are away from home, even in the UK, for more than 7 days it's a good idea to have both parts with you.

I never have mine with me or any other ID
The last time the police required my licence was something like 20 years ago
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

You have to produce it at the time, however you are given 7 days grace or 5 in the event of an injury collision. But they still allow you 7 days.

    .

That way, anyone can produce fake insurance docs too?
The point about carrying a photocopy is to have something that the cops can cross check with their records.
