I am just wondering what you lot think.

Do you think its fair that Job Centre advisors ask us to send spec letters out to companies/Employers when we are only on a low income?

Also when employers receive your spec letters, do you believe they just throw them in the bin without reading them? because if they do that then its a waste of our money.

I can't understand why Job Centre ask us to do this when we only get a small amount of money, I thought the reason we claim Job Seekers is stated in the law for the amount of us to live on and support us until we get a Job?

I will be glad the day when I get a Job as I hate going to Job Centre. :(
Oh dear god please tell me not another useless question AGAIN!!???

    Are you totally serious OP???

You do not have to SEND anything we have been over this use a thing called EMAIL!!!

I am seriously thinking you are not even looking for a job let alone want one.

If you started listening to people and taking some of their advice you might just get there ;)

Spec letters: Personally, I think for the most part they're a waste of time. If there was a job going it would be advertised.
That said, you could get lucky and land a spec application in front of an employer who hasn't yet advertised a position or is looking to expand/hire in the near future.
I wouldn't rule them out altogether
  • I don't know, about twenty percent of new employees at our place are as a result of a speculative letter or email...it's cheaper for the firm if applicants have to come to us, rather than advertise a specific role or pay recruitment agencies to headhunt.
I do think it makes a good first impression too...

I am on the side of the Job Seeker 99% of the time, on this point though I can not agree with you.

You can send the majority of spec applications via email nowadays, so there is really no excuse. Also if you look for local job clubs you may find some that can offer some help with postage.

    I agree totally.

I was always sceptical of the benefits of speculative enquiries and I gave up after I was made redundant some years ago. I did get employment but I wanted something more challenging.

Recently I started sending them out again and bingo - I was invited to see the MD- I was then asked to return to give a presentation and do some practical work and shortly afterwards, I was then offered a job with a very good salary/pension/private health scheme. Incidentally the role was not even advertised.

Did the company see me as a young high flyer? I don't think so.

    I am a 56 year old grandad!

It took me around 20 minutes to find details of the company contacts and send off a speculative email - well worth the 'effort' IMO.

Its possible to send out a spec letter via email and attach a microsoft word document to it and if you dont have microsoft word on your pc you can get a trial version.

What is the POINT OF THIS THREAD???????? (hilarity aside)

Anyone with a brain bigger than a pea would know by now you can email a CV to a prospective employer.

Everyone's allowed an opinion, until you don't like someone else's opinion, right? And tell them you never asked for their opinion, right? Am I right? Please tell me I'm right. I needz teh attenshunz.

One of the ways of getting a job is to send spec letters to employers. Some will read them, some won't, you'll never know who doesn't, will you??

A job is not going to fall from the sky, you have to make it happen and budget accordingly for whatever you have to spend to get one.
