I rarely post on here, and I'm concerned the OP will have gone off for information elsewhere whilst all the "disagreement" was filling up her thread. However I wanted to post the following link which she may wish to show the school

    http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/News_Landing_Page/Diabetes-UK-welcomes-major-step-from-Government-to-improve-support-for-school-children-with-health-needs/

I don't know if OP's child is diabetic. It doesn't really matter as the change will affect all children with health needs in Education. Whilst the new guidelines are not yet in place, the article makes it clear that there is an expectation on schools to give the same education to all children. Regardless of health needs. This includes residential trips.

OP does your child have a healthcare plan at school? If so I would aim to get it amended to include work being sent home whilst the child is hospitalised. Try to get your daughters health professionls to write & suggest this. Also talk to the Hospital staff, they should be able to offer advice as to what happens for other children who are long term in hospital & advise you of a "way forward" Good luck, and don't give up xx

Btw, as someone else asked the question, yes there are still Education Welcare Officers and they would normally get involved when a child's attendance drops below 85% I would imagine they would take a pretty dim view of a school not offerring assistance when a child is missing so much school. The LEA should be able to put the OP in touch with them.

They would but that won't necessarily make the teachers provide work.

We had meetings with the class teacher, the Deputy Head, the EWOs and individual subject teachers. Did it result in a steady stream of work or occasional bits of work (which were never marked and returned), the same bit of work several times or no work at all - all of the last three, unfortunately.

My son was also very surprised to find that he did quite well in his end-of-term French exams when he had hardly been in class at all and had missed the exams completely.

As a teacher and a school governor, I was very disappointed in the way the school lost interest in children who were still on their roll but with poor attendance because of health problems.

With other parents, I set up a group to campaign for better treatment and had regular meetings with the LEA but it hardly changed things at all. All of us had children at different schools and the picture was much the same for all the schools.

There comes a point where you realise your time, energy and money is better spent providing an education for your children through other means.

How does that work with items like shoes?

You can buy shoes without paying the VAT if you need that particular kind of shoe because of health problems - arthritis, oedema, etc.

The exact same shoes can be bought by overweight people who need the extra width but they have to pay the VAT.

Life must be lonely for Andy/oldboy64/bigbrotherbarnone/tonyciclo/Tinkledom under the troll bridge. Seems he forgot we'd already rumbled it was him on this alter ego.

  • Thank you all. I have been reading but poor reception and a busy half term schedule mean no chance. I'm also pretty fuming at the emails I received that were forwarded from here.

What the fact I specialise in early years has to do with knowing physics, chemistry or languages I don't know. Just because someone is a qualified teacher with QTS doesn't mean they know everything.

I will pop back later when calmed down as some people have raised some really good points I'd like to thank and reply to. Right now, signal and my temper mean best not but to those who gave advice, it's being read, it's appreciated and I will get back.

Just to say the school haven't been given chance yet, only HOY, I could be premature once the HT meeting occurs, but HOY is pretty useless.
  • I was in the position of your daughter when I was younger. I got really sick and my mobility about three months or so after I turned 15. School were awful about stuff and the days I managed in any upstairs classes I did on my own in the library.

What we did find useful in getting the school to provide work and to keep the attendence officer off our back was a doctors letter. Not just a simple one, but the doctor wrote about everything they knew was wrong at the time and how it effected me.

We did and I still do claim DLA and I claim ESA. I cried when the letter first came through saying I had been awarded it. Simply because finally I could get the equipment I need, we could have the heating on longer, hospital trips weren't such a drain etc. I also found it useful when I was finally able to apply to college a few years later, they offered discounts and subsides for people receiving it. It may be you could buy your daughter a copy of coursebooks. If you know what exam board, syllabus etc you can usually get books to match and they tell you on their website what you need to know. This could also help with a tutor so they knew they were covering the right material.
