Accidently put into reverse while driving on dual carriageway

You may well have been lucky and only knocked out the easily replaced clutch. But what about those particles and shavings that are floating around in your gearbox oil? Didn't they at least recommend it getting flushed?
Gearboxes normally have a magnetic filler or sump plug on them to catch all the metal particles and shavings. If the clutch was done, then the gearbox would have been drained before removal. When we used to do this, we cleaned the magnetic plug and then refilled with fresh oil once fitted.
Perhaps the OP never put the car into reverse as first thought. Maybe the clutch was so worn that when they went to change gear it was really going into the correct gear but couldn't fully shift because the clutch was worn. All your base are belong to us.0 -
Who drains a gearbox to change a clutch?0

Who drains a gearbox to change a clutch?
Me and all the mechanics i had worked with when i was in the motor trade
It's a good idea unless you want all the oil spilling out the gearbox and making a mess when you remove it from the engine bay or try and refit it.All your base are belong to us.0 -
Ah, those Morris Minors were such cute little boxes too.0

I wouldn't know. I wasn't born when they were still commonly in useAll your base are belong to us.0

You haven't worked in a workshop either.0

Pretty pointless giving out opinion gleaned from the internet instead of from skills, knowledge and experience. A fitter will be doing his upmost to stop transmission oil from leaking out when taking the gearbox out. Not only will he have to top it up when its refitted, but it is the most foul smelling liquid that you can get covered in.
I'm sure you wouldn't like the OP to believe that now the clutch has been replaced, the car is guaranteed to be as good as new.0 -
I'm another who drains the box of fluids before I remove the drive shafts and spill MTF/ATF on the floor (although its a really good cleaning fluid it will degrade the concrete!) although it really is upto the owner whether they want to spend that extra money on fluids. but generally ive had no issue with people paying the extra as they don't when it was changed last when I able to do these things.
Not all shards get collected on the magnet, especially when the shards are flying about in there when the damage is initially done, ive seen pieces of cogs stuck in there no where near the magnet.0 -
Does the gate that stops you moving from 5th to reverse still work?
If you move the leaver from 5th to inbetween 3rd and 4th, then back across, you can go into reverse, but if you pull straight back from 5th, you should not be able to get into reverse - this done stationary with clutch in!
As above, might be worth getting a gearbox oil change done if it has not been done, gears take a lot of abuse, but those metal fillings have to go somewhere!0
