Mazdas also dont need any lifting/collar to go into reverse, major flaw ive found as ive "Scrunched" many times.
  • Yeah, but I can't believe I scrunched to the point of so much damage. I mean I stopped as soon as I heard the noise.

Anyway, mechanic is coming out to look at it shortly. He seems skeptical when I told him what I had done....seemed to think it shouldn't be possible.

Stating the obvious, but it must have been pretty knackered to start with.
  • I've never noticed any problems with it before....the gear shifts have been fine with no grinding or other odd noises, and it's felt fine to me. :undecided It's been a pretty good little car.

It is possible in some, but not all cars. I've got about half an inch from doing this in a brand new Partner van (clutch coming up and something didn't feel right, then I realised it wasn't a 6 speed ).
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Snap, we have a Peugeot Expert 6 speed and Peugeot Partner 5 speed, really have to think about when joining a motorway.

Could be worse. Have you ever heard a Vauxhall Cavalier with valve bounce?

Almost new hire car. My car at the time was a V8 auto. I wont say racing.. But.. Well 2nd gear foot to the floor. It got to 70mph and made a funny buzzing sound and died. I forgot it was a manual and i needed to change gear.

Luckily it was a long straight downhill stretch. Popped into a higher gear and it bump started.

Makes you wonder who bought it afterwards and if they had any issues.

Young and no speed camera's back then. Traffic cars with cameras in though is another story.. :X

Well, the recovery guy came out this morning, had a go of the car and said it looks like the clutch is gone. In the end I decided to drive it up to the garage with him following me (at his suggestion), and it was ok...except that I kept it in 2nd gear all the way because I couldn't change gears.

The mechanic drove it around and said the same thing, that he thinks it's the clutch. He said it's fine once it's in gear, drives ok (except for the clutch vibration), except it's very hard to put in gear, especially with the engine on.

So, I have no idea what I've done, because I'm sure the clutch was fine before my little mishap. Could I have lifted the clutch before the gear was fully in and that's what caused the problem? I could have sworn I'd rubbed it against the reverse gear and that's why it did the grinding noise.

He'll ring me on Monday and let me know, but a new clutch will cost me around £250-ish.

A friend had a Merc 190 manual and drove from Leicester to Heathrow in third gear- just forgot to change to fifth gear when he joined the M1. Comes off the motorway and looks down to change and can't understand how is in third gear already- then the penny drops. Nugget.

The large amount of load on the clutch during your mishap could have damaged it, I'd trust their judgement.

I made this face when I opened the thread! :D
