  • Possibly the pin is locked/ Try unlocking it in an ATM.

Hi ive opened a new bank acount with lloyds bank and the card came a few days ago and set it up with paypal ect and made a few payments.

Went to my local garage today to use the atm and it says cant read chip and give me my card back.

Is this because the atm is a old machine or is it a problem with my card?

Is it a normal loyds account (eg classic) or a 'cash account', the cash account only works in Lloyds,TSB, Halifax and Bank of Scotland cash machines

It wouldn't have been that anyway as the ATM wouldn't have said the chip couldn't be read. It also would have let them enter their PIN.

I've not actually tried it myself (I had a Bank of Scotland version of the cash account), but the cards don't have the Link app on the smartcard (a normal debit card has a visa/mastercard app and a link app), this could confuse some ATMs

    Assuming it's a normal card I'd think it's just a faulty card

Did you have an invoice to scan into the ATM?

HSBC rules say you may require proof for any cash withdrawals.

Seriously? Although surely the pin is equivalent to proof for most transactions...
