New lloyds bank card not working

Hi ive opened a new bank acount with lloyds bank and the card came a few days ago and set it up with paypal ect and made a few payments.

Went to my local garage today to use the atm and it says cant read chip and give me my card back.

Is this because the atm is a old machine or is it a problem with my card?

  • It could be either.

    Or something completely different.

Have you tried an alternative ATM?

Do you really believe that you can get an answer here based on the information you posted?

Any reasonable person would have tried using the card in an ATM(s) first before guessing.

Also, were the earlier "few payments" online or in shops?

It sounds like the card. I checked my card on a card reader to ensure I had the right PIN, if you have access to a card reader it may be worth a check.

If it works ok for purchases, then probably nothing wrong with the chip.

Sounds like the ATM had a dirty chip reader.

  • Phone Lloyds, explain what happened and they can look at why your card's been declined.

If they have no info it's likely the garage's card machine is faulty.

If it said it couldn't read the chip (Or magnetic stripe on older ATMS) that is obviously whats wrong, no really need to call them if the card works ok anywhere else.
