They also act as the gatekeeper to certaiin benefits, to make sure that claimants are keepoing up their siide of the deal in full.

It's disingenuous of you to imply that they are, or even should be, only about help, and not about enforcement.

The staff must have the patience of saints to put up with some of the posters on here. It beggars belief, frankly, how bad some people are, and is laughable that they then get on their high horse the moment they are not treated with kid gloves.
It is disingenuous of you to suggest my saying they are there to help implies that they should not be concerned with validation and enforcement; I did not say such a thing.

But it does seem to me that they have the enforcement mindset rather than the help one; their approach can be ill-considered and heavy-handed, and in this case they've got it wrong and caused upset because of that mindset.

I don't need too thanks. I have been employed for the last 14 years and know exactly how one should behave at work.

I was not referring to you personally. Sorry if I have mislead.

I think Jobseeking Is a full-time activity for which the Government pays money to assist the Jobseeker in their living costs and to pay their rent. Therefore there should be some onus on the Jobseeker to behave in a professional manner like they would do if they were at work. That's all I am saying.

    No probs :)

I agree. But someone at work who was 2 minutes late JUST ONCE would get a ticking off. Someone late for a JSA appointment JUST ONCE would get their only source of income stopped for a whole month.

How the heck is that fair? Its just a tool to terrorize claimants with really.

It's debatable whether someone being a few minutes late for work would be noticed at all; it very much depends upon the job - some require people to be there at a precise time and others don't.

I have said before I accept mistakes are taken post 12 but when you sanction someone mistaken they should have double checked. It seems the person who saw here when she signed on didn't record it correctly.

Today she has just received her P45 whilst still on JSA

She just started today her voluntary work at meals on wheels. Obviously she wants a job but it seems few people are sadly prepared to employ disabled people. Even if the job was part time it would make her day

Sorry didn't know correct terminology it would appear you are correct and that it was closed. The first she knew of it was yesterday when she got the letter, she was extremely upset when she got this letter.

Ok something is confusing me here because I don't see how your daughter could of been sanctioned are you sure her claim wasn't closed?

if a person misses an appointment/ sign on they have 5 working days in which to contact us then the claim would be closed. So on the letter it would have stated you failed to attend on the 15th we cannot pay you jsa from the 1st which would have been the date of the last attendance when a declaration was made

if contact is made within the 5 days an ajacs appointment would have been booked for the claimant to explain there reasons for failing to attend, a sanction would not be reffered to a DM without this taking place. If the customer was sanctiond this would hav been from the date of failure if a signing day i.e the 15th in your case.

I don't think it is fair if it happened just once and it was not the Jobseekers' fault. But I actually find it difficult to believe that they have a month's money stopped under these circumstances. Surely it is only for serial offenders.

I don't know for sure - but I think I have seen posts where people have been sanctioned for a month on their first ¨lateness¨ offence. Could be wrong though.

I was late for a jsa appointment - I had thought the appointment was for 10.50, but when I picked up the paperwork at 9.35 to get it ready, I noticed it was for 9.50. It took me 10 mins to get through to them to say I was going to be late, and confess to being stupid :) . The first person I spoke to was very off with me, then I had to ring someone else. Once they had checked my name etc and it must have showed I had only been unemployed for 4 weeks or so, he was really nice, and told me just to go down to the job centre and see if they could fit me in. I actually managed to arrive at about 10.10, and I had absolutely no problems at all. In fact I commented to my adviser that I was really scared that I would be sanctioned, and she laughed and stated that they weren't all monsters, and it was unlikely you would be sanctioned for a one off mistake, especially if you were new to signing on.

You do not get sanctioned for turning up late on the first occasion you get an ES19 which is a late notification, which has a follow up appointment time. If you are then late for the appointment on the es19 you are referred to a decision maker who then decides if you had good cause for being late if not then you are sanctioned.
