Job centre what the hell is going on

  • You should let them know if you are going to be late, or get an earlier bus. You would also be in trouble if you turned up at work late with no explanation.

My son's girlfriend thought she was going to be late for work the other day, because the bus had to make a diversion, so she texted her supervisor to warn her. In the end she wasn't late, but that is the correct and professional approach.

Bet she wouldn't lose a whole months wages though for being late just once. There's the difference.

No, she wouldn't, but she would be reprimanded and could lose her job if repeatedly late.

I agree losing a month's money is harsh, but do think that there should be sanctions. There would be if you were at work, so get used to it now.

But of course the employee is giving something back in exchange for their wages, it's a two-way street. The out of work claimant is not, they are just receiving cash. They also have far less excuse for poor timekeeping, as they are not having to fit 40-50 hours work plus commuting into their waking week.

Personally I think a sanction for a first offence of being late is the right thing, and that it should be enforced in every case. Impressing the importance of punctuality and sticking to agreements on jobseekers is no bad thing.

I just asked a deputy manager who works for Job Centre Plus and was advised even if a claimant phoned in to the Job Centre they'll arrive late to sign in they'll simply be told to arrive on time or they will be sanctioned. Bus arriving late is not a valid excuse. You 'may' be giving some leniency if there's a provable landslide or similar drastic obstruction hindering transport but you're likely to be referred to a decision maker. IF you are let off for say an earthquake it's a one time thing and you get a letter warning you to turn up on time in the future.

You can phone in to let an employer know bus services are taking a route diversion but you can't use this same excuse for JSA. Expect a sanction if you try this excuse.

I think there should be leeway if the bus has to make an unexpected diversion, because that is beyond your control and is provable. Just not getting an early enough bus is a different matter. (Or getting the usual bus knowing it had to make a diversion and would take longer and therefore you would be late).

However, the Jobcentre must have heard all the excuses in the book about why people are not there on time, which is why there are sanctions for not doing so. A guy I know thought it was most unreasonable of them to expect him to attend while England were playing football.

The Job Centre is there to help people who need it; they really need to take a look at themselves and think about what they are about.
  • Only ever been late to sign on once - I wasn't sanctioned, but I was treated with complete and utter contempt and derision.

I usually walked to town but on this day decided to get the bus. I had gone out with 2 hours to spare, it takes 15 minutes by bus into town. On this day I waited, and waited, and waited, it eventually turned up over an hour late! (later it was in the local paper regarding the circumstances behind this)

I ended up getting off the bus early and running as fast as I could to the job centre. I ended up being just over a minute late - I was hyperventilating and having an asthma attack - I quite clearly wasn't taking the mickey.

I take punctuality very seriously, but I think at times some humanity could be shown.

They also act as the gatekeeper to certaiin benefits, to make sure that claimants are keepoing up their siide of the deal in full.

It's disingenuous of you to imply that they are, or even should be, only about help, and not about enforcement.

The staff must have the patience of saints to put up with some of the posters on here. It beggars belief, frankly, how bad some people are, and is laughable that they then get on their high horse the moment they are not treated with kid gloves.

What you actually mean is that people should be punished for being unemployed and treated like idiots.

The number 1 reason why I will never claim it is because of attitudes like yours and I have paid into the system for 20 years.

    Well done :)

I don't need too thanks. I have been employed for the last 14 years and know exactly how one should behave at work.
