Silly question - where is my water meter??

in Water bills
I moved into this house last October, called United utilitles who said I had a meter & i needed to read it.
I presumed a little box at the front of my house (labelled water) with a cable coming from it was my water meter and gave them this number.
Then roll on to today, and i get a bill, saying my meter was read on 14th April. I remember a man asking for vans to be moved from the pavement in front of my house on that date, so he could read meters.
The numbers on the bill do not correspond the the number on the meter in front of my house. I have no idea how they got the reading in October??
So i'm confused - is my water meter really under the pavement?? What is the box in front of my house??
Anyone who can shed some light would be helpful....

Mine is outside the house. There's a small metal flap about 12cm square set in the footpath that I lift up to see my meter and take a reading. Is that what yours by the house looks like - or the one the meter amn maybe looked at?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. There's no such thing as a silly question on this chat forum/site!“Ordinary riches can be stolen, real riches cannot. In your soul are infinitely precious things that cannot be taken from you.” - Oscar Wilde0

Of course not - and I should have said so myself! <blush>Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Mine is also set in the pavement outside, beneath a small round metal cover"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

they are usually set in the pavement outside your house, where your supply meets the mains, under a small metal cover (usually need a screwdriver to lift it)0

I have just posted this "Warning your water meter may not be yours!". If you are in any doubt that your water company is reading the correct meter get them to check it.
I have been paying for someone elses water for 8 years. Although my post was about flats it may also happen in houses.0
