BT charging to stop broadband service?!?

Options
So, I have recently left BT broadband in favour of Sky - using the code from MSE - a great deal... All transferred smoothly and now running much better than when I was with BT, for half the price. Happy days!

However, today I received an e-mail from BT stating that they were going to charge us £30 to stop the service...

I am out of my contract period, rang them in plenty of time to cancel, got my MAC code from them to change the supplier... How can they justify this charge??

Any advice? Has anyone else received the same e-mail...???

Thanks guys xxx

  • This is the info from BT...

"What is the Broadband Cease Charge?
The Broadband Cease Charge is a charge raised in certain circumstances to cover the additional cost to BT of the work required within an exchange to recover equipment and amend records when a Broadband line is ceased.
When will the charge be raised?
This charge will be raised should you :-
Switch to another Broadband provider without following the standard Migration Authorisation Code (MAC) process.
Switch to another Broadband provider without following another recognised transfer process, when it applies.
    Switch to a Cable provider.
    Cease your Broadband completely.
Cease your Broadband and move outside of the UK.
When won't the charge be raised?
This charge will not be raised should you :-
Move home and you re-connect to BT Total Broadband via the homemover process.
Move home and we are unable to provide the service at your new UK address.
You are ceasing service due to bereavement or severe illness."

Still think it's a total rip off!!

The £30 cease charge from OR has been in the B&T T7C's for several years now, as with every other ISP.

    Did Sky use the MAC?

If it was used there should be no £30 cease charge as you have transferred to another BB service.

Find out why you're being charged and complain.
  • Same thing has happened to me.got the mse deal, switched to sky on the 7th,tesco have emailed to say I owe them £28.56(this runs to 3/3).I paid them on the 24/2!.robbers!

@shazzablue - that might be a payment in lieu of notice as they will have a notice period in their ts & cs -not necessarily a cease charge.
@shootforthemoon - if you move to full LLU with Sky from BT then they won't use a MAC...BUT I understood that the regulator had ruled that these transfers would not incur a cease charge??
  • That's what I wanted to hear!! Thanks guys!

I rang BT for the MAC code on the day I switched, and gave it to Sky, so I can only assume it was used... Cue phone call to query the charge... Fingers crossed!!

Not every other ISP at all. I moved from Talk Talk to BT 18 months ago and there was no cease charge. Also cant see anything about it in Sky T&C either.
  • Not sure if done this correctly have been charged the 30 for the cease charge and now been charged another 68 because I cancelled contract early can they do this as well

The early termination charge and cease charge are entirely seperate. If you used a MAC there should be no cease charge so that can be disputed. As to the early termination I've no idea - if you were still in the minimum contract term they are entitled to make a charge.

If you are going to Sky LLU then the MAC code may not have been used, especially if you are moving your phone as well. This will be treated as a cease and provide hence the £30 cancellation.

OR charge ALL ISPs that provide ADSL via BT line with a cancellation charge, whether the ISP then passes it is is their choice.
