My gorgeous boy passed away 10/2/14 at 19.15. He was 8 and a half years old.

Sleep tight x

Hi

Looking for any advice really as I'm so worried. My 9 year old fur baby took ill this morning, he was breathing with his mouth open, whole tummy moving whilst he was breathing.
Obviously I rushed him to the vets, but they were unable to say what it could be, maybe his heart, maybe his lungs, wait and see.

They are planning on doing an X-ray when they have stabilised him and hopefully we will no more but I'm heartbroken, just looking for anything positive really. The vet seemed really negative about the whole thing. :(

My Delilah is 12 now and had asthma since around 9. She gets a steroid each day 1m and it manages the breathing etc really well.

Hopefully it will be the case for your furbaby.

The vet cannot really say until the x ray. Could be lungs fluid or even fluid round the heart. It can be drained and managed.
  • Thanks, I'm hoping it's asthma and nothing worse, vet called and told me hey are giving him oxygen and that his breathing has worsened somewhat, he said the prognosis is guarded ( I think that's the right wording) I didn't think to ask as I'm too upset, I take it this is not good

My 4 year old seal point Siamese developed strange breathing, he seemed to be using his whole body to breath (if that makes any sense).

He was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy and the prognosis wasn't good, bless his little cotton socks he went on for a further 5 months, which the vet said for the breed was remarkable as Siamese have a habit of just giving up. He was on constant medication which helped greatly but it's not a cure and I had to make the best decision for him to let him go when he stopped eating.

I do hope that it is something else and he'll make a full recovery.

My boy is half Siamese, and doesn't do illness well. My other cats get on with it but he has a tendency to stop eating and drinking when he is not well, and last time he was ill had to be syringe fed.

He's my 11 year old daughters cat. I'm not looking forward to telling her after school. The house feels so empty without him

I know when they aren't around it feels so different and empty but I will say a little prayer and fingers crossed the house will feel full again
  • So sorry to hear about this :(. 'Guarded prognosis' means that the illness may be life-threatening, but they can't really tell you which way it will go yet. So sorry. I hope she gets through this, how is she doing now?

    Please keep us updated.
  • Vet has told me it's pyrothorax ( not sure of spelt correctly. ) they have tried to drain his chest but the pus is very thick and they are not having much luck. They have suggested a throcotomy but at present he is too weak.
I am faced with the decision of waiting until he is stronger which may never happen, continuing with antibiotics or putting him to sleep. At present the vet says he is not responding and having a lot of difficulty breathing.

I'm heartbroken. He has been with me since he was 6 weeks old.

  • In the end I didn't have to make any decisions, my brave little man died at 19.15 this evening. My world is darker and the house is so much quieter.

Oh no :( (and sorry about calling him a her - got my wires crossed).
It is painful when it is time to say goodbye, but I can tell you this - it does get better. I lost two within a week recently and they had been with me for 15 years, but when it was all over and done with I was glad that they were no longer suffering.
