I have gone over budget for the week by £1.27 already, perhaps it can be salvaged back for the month by going under budget next week? Anyway it's not that big a deal really just me getting obsessive lol.

The family are getting a bit sick of the ASDA smartprice items that keep appearing hehe but I must say I am impressed with the quality so far. I have my fingers crossed for the smartprice rice crispies to be tasty - their own brand of crisp rice or whatever they call it in the regular box was much nicer than Kelloggs - we had Kelloggs the other day and they seem to have changed their recipe for the worst.

You are right about making a list of what you have at home - I used to have a huge upright freezer that was always packed solid with food, yet I always still went food shopping.
Last year we got rid of the separate fridge and freezer and bought one of those American style fridge freezers. The freezer space is about a third of what I used to have but I manage it so much better because I know what's in it. There's a light inside which comes on when you open the door of the freezer (just like a normal fridge) and that means nothing ever gets lost in a dark corner!

Thanks for all your useful tips, everyone - I can feel a good month coming on! :D

I've just updated my sig, its not looking good for the month :o

I bought chicken today; I want to use up a jar sauce, and a packet mix both of which are just out of date so got enough chicken to do both. I also bought tofu and veggie sausages to try; those 3 things came to just under £6 so pushed my total up a bit.

I think for the rest of the month I will try not to buy anything at all. I make my own bread, got loads of dried milk, and loads of frozen/tinned/dried veggies plus my own salad and beans and potatoes in the garden. I'm thinking maybe I'll challenge myself for the rest of the month, can I do it?

goes off to find Gingham Ribbon's veggie threads to find out how to cook tofu.....
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

    Hi everyone
Well I am very pleased with myself. I cut my budget from £200+ to £160 this month and stocked up. I still have £60 left with cupboards and freezer full. I have to say that with just the two of us now its easier as I have the time to plan and cook. No more ready meals for us, everything is cooked from stratch. I bought some beef mince reduced to £2. and with a tin of kidney beans and storecupboard supplies I just made a big pan of chilli, enough for four meals. Thios board is saving me a fortune so my purse thanks you all.
Trying to get my younger daughter to try some sort of plan but she has a high powered job plus a sixteen year old with attitude and as she is a single parent she just rushes fhrough life, they eat at Pizzy Hut at least once a week and when I saw the prices I was horrified. She thinks I am turning into my mother in law so I have to shut up. Did tempt her into Lydl where she filled three bags with shopping such as washing powers etc for £37 but I doubt she will go back as she says she has the time to shop in Tesco only.
She reminds me of myself before coming on here
