so make sure you can find somebody to fit them for you before you buy on-line

Indeed. I think that's where I was heading in the OP

I use a local independent for my tyres and try to support them if i can, i live in a rural area and it is handy having a good tyre shop just around the corner

last year i Bought a new set of alloys and asked my tyre depot to take the tyres off the old rims and fit and balance them on the new rims and they charged £10.00 a corner to do this

a month later i was back and spent £700.00 on a full set of winter tyres fitted to my old rims

I would not but new tyres on-line and ask them to fit them for me as i dont see that as fair, i would price tyres up on line and then go and ask them to match the price or get as close to it as they can

if they can get to within £50.00 on set four then i go with the local as i see this as what it would cost me for fit and balance the tyres i bought on line

That's all well and good - but £50 is a lot of money to some people so not everybody has the choice of using their local independent if it costs that much more.

The point of my post was that if you buy on line from the real cheap suppliers then you have to pay for fitting locally which would cost me £40.00 but many will have to pay £12.50 a tyre for fit balance and disposal

So the cost would be the very similar for supply only or for fully fitted

Websites like Blackcircles.com and mytyres.co.uk will have prices including fitting at a range of tyre fitters local to you - I'd go that route myself.

I'd also try http://www.f1autocentres.co.uk/ as they have been very competetive when I've looked recently.

Once you've found the best online price, try phoning a couple of local tyre places to see if they can do better. They might.

You may have already decided what tyres you want but if not I'd recommend looking at test results here:

    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/

(If you really want to know what it will cost to have tyres you've bought separately fitted, phone up a couple of places local to you and ask. Prices will vary a bit depending on where in the country you are.)

My local Places all seem to be registered to fit with black circles and My tyres, but if you take the old tyres away, they charge less. I'm using my old tyres in the garden to grow veg in. But the tip is not 200 yrds from about 4 tyre shops, so not hard to drop them off and save £3 each. :rotfl:

My local independent tyre shop is cheaper than the online prices.

    Dont assume online is cheaper.

Agreed. If I'm buying a new set, I can normally beat the online prices given half an hour and the local phone book.

Don't forget the main dealerships as well, they can be very competitve on batteries and tyres.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

  • The only problem with local indies is that they often want to sell what they, not you, want.

OK if you only want any old cheap round rubber things that the law forces you to replace when the wires start to poke through, but not always so helpful if you want a specific tyre from your shortlist.

My local place used to have a good front man who would find what you wanted from your shortlist, and invariably get within about £8 of the best online price, bingo, we're all happy.

He left, his replacement doesn't play ball, don't bother going there any more.

    Nexen????

Our OP is trying to keep his lad out of the scenery not stuff him into it.

I would have thought that until our local trusted dealer recomended them for our Saab 93 a few years ago, they were great, never any grip issues, I now have them on my Passat and happy with them again.

Fair comment, i find Federals quite good too, espacially considering how cheaply they can be found now and again.

Mind you pick ups are a whole different ball game to your two decent handling cars.

Nexen are by no means the worst tyres on the market. They are one of the more respectable budget brands, and I wouldn't be in a rush to change them if they were on a car I'd just bought.
