I'm looking around for some new tyres. They are of course much cheaper online. If I go that route though and have them delivered, how much to local places charge for fitting and balancing?

  • My local tyre shops charge £10 per tyre fitted + balanced.

If you already know the tyre you want then buy it from Reifen in Germany...even with delivery charges to UK, they easily beat all UK online retailers and delivery from Germany is within a week.

Websites like Blackcircles.com and mytyres.co.uk will have prices including fitting at a range of tyre fitters local to you - I'd go that route myself.

I'd also try http://www.f1autocentres.co.uk/ as they have been very competetive when I've looked recently.

Once you've found the best online price, try phoning a couple of local tyre places to see if they can do better. They might.

You may have already decided what tyres you want but if not I'd recommend looking at test results here:

(If you really want to know what it will cost to have tyres you've bought separately fitted, phone up a couple of places local to you and ask. Prices will vary a bit depending on where in the country you are.)

I need 255/65 R17 tyres. I was looking at the Michelin Latitude Cross. Camskill are doing tthese for £130 + delivery. That's a total of £533 for 4. Next best price I could find was over £150 and the best fitted price is over £170. Reifen seem to have no tyres in this size at all. I did also look at f1autocenter and they don't do these particular tyres either
  • I often use www.tyreshopper.co.uk They're pretty good. I've just done a quote and your tyres come up as from £115.00 each. That would = £460.00. BUT you can get 5% off using code DC5ALL. That'd make the price £437.00 and that's with fitting, balancing etc at a garage of your choice near you. Put your car reg in the search box or fill out your exact criteria for a more specific result

    £177.50 for the Michelins though
  • Yes, I was just offering you that as a suggestion though in case operating on a budget was at the forefront of your mind

Thanks. It's always a minefield with tyres. I'm told that some budget tyres are pretty good. However, my 18 yo son has just passed his test and I want to give him every chance of avoiding an accident. The back end of a pick-up truck is very skittish in dodgy weather

I don't know about the sort of large tyres you are looking for, but for more normal road tyres it is generally the case that budget tyres aren't much worse than premium tyres in good weather, but in the wet the differences can be significant. Like you I wouldn't skimp on tyres. The tyres you are looking at also have a better rolling resistance than the otheres I looked at quickly, which will help a little with mpg.

My local independent tyre shop is cheaper than the online prices.

    Dont assume online is cheaper.

After a lot or research i put a set of General Grabber UHP's on my pick up, they did grip very well in the wet, the sizes i needed (265/70 x 16) were very well priced, around £80 apiece IIRC.

Michelins i have never found to be a good tyre for wet grip, going right back to X's and ZX's.
