Benefits Help after Resigning

No we separated 2 years ago and have a daughter together who I see Thursday to Sunday every week at the moment.
So I am officially single and only I reside in the property0 -
If you are living in a rental property, you would probably be able to get Housing Benefit (or the equivalent for private tenants) on the grounds of low income. Be warned that I have heard there is quite a wait for payment in some areas.0

The property is not rented , it is my own property and currently mortgaged (all up to date ATM) but obviously after the end of this month I will have no means to pay it if I am sanctioned ?!
If sanctioned do the funds get backdated when sanction lifted ?
If I resign on Tuesday when do I go to the job centre to make them aware ?
Thanks again for any help you guys can give

I know it's a bit late for you now, but this is why financial advisors recommend that it is a good idea to have the equivalent of six months salary put away as an emergency fund for a rainy day.
If you are sanctioned you simply don't get the money - payment is not just postponed until the sanction is lifted. I believe there is a hardship fund that can pay out if you are really struggling, but I don't think this covers things like mortgage payments.
You need to go to the jobcentre as soon as your current employment is officially ended - so it will depend on whether they will expect you to work out any notice or let you go with immediate effect.
I suggest you visit the 'Debt free wannabee' board for further advice on how to get by in the short term - obvious suggestions are to consider asking your mortgage provide if you can take a payment holiday, looking for ways to reduce your budget and considering whether you have anything that you could sell.0 -

I think you need to get some advice re this particularly as you dont rent your home. As far as Im aware its only the interest on a mortgage that the DWP pays and then only for a certain amount of time, if you rent your home you would get some or all of your rent covered by housing benefit but its different for homeowners.
As far as Im aware being sacked or resigning can both fall under the category of making yourself intentionally unemployed.0 -

I agree its a no brainer , whats the likely timescale for me to be sanctioned ?
I don't expect to be out of work for a long time (fingers crossed anyway) but in the mean time i will have no means of income whatsoever , so how would I be expected to attend the job centre / interviews / apply for new jobs etc ? never mind putting a roof over my head.
I am currently still suspended , but will be handing in my resignation next week when i get my invite to the discplinary procedure.
Thanks for the replies

For goodness sake get some advice on this before you go handing in your notice. I understand that you want the reference and your employer have made it clear your options and that disciplinary is not nice. But you have the right to state your case and you also have the right to appeal any disciplinary imposed on you and you would be paid to the point that your contract was terminated.
If you resign on Tuesday you will be making a claim for benefit that you may or may not get.
You have no way to pay your mortgage and that wont be paid by the DWP as far as Im aware.
A better way to leave would be through a formal compromise agreement which would be drawn up by a lawyer where you negotiate a reference and that shouldnt affect your right to benefits. I left my job by way of a compromise agreement 4 years ago, I wasnt being disciplined but there were reasons that my contract had to come to an end, I was being bullied and my health was badly affected and it didnt affect my JSA. I signed on as soon as I left, they knew I had left by way of a compromise agreement and it didnt cause me any difficulty signing on.
Your employers may say no to this, but I think the worst thing you can do is hand in your notice without speaking to a union rep, an employment lawyer or someone from the CAB. It might also be worth giving ACAS a call.0 -
I do have some savings (enough to cover 2/3 months mortgage) so will phone them when I officially resign and advise I have lost my job etc

Before you resign get some advice and see if your employer will let you go by way of a compromise agreement. Have you spoken to anyone about this situation? Union rep? Acas? Lawyer?
If you are sanctioned how are you going to live? All you could apply for is hardship benefit in that instance.0 -
I will speak to CAB on Monday
But basically without going into intricate details , what I done was wrong I eventually held my hands up and admitted to what I had done and there is no other way to look at it other than gross misconduct which I completely understand and accept - as I said it was me who done wrong.
The options given to me were
1) Resign with immediate effect to stop the disciplinary process and reference will still be available etc
2) Go to disciplinary hearing and will 99% be dismissed for gross misconduct and possibly worse ramifications depending how far my employer want to push it.
