DVLA Failure to relicense

I live in a city centre, the last time I used my car was a month ago. And I VERY rarely take note of it. I remembered last year I received a letter that I needed to renew and naturally I assumed I would receive this again.

Are you unable to get your head around the simple facts that I have stated. Can you honestly not believe some people don't look?

My OH bought a car, it had about 6weeks tax on it, we then waited for the log book and the tax renewal form, we got a fine first about 1 week after tax ran out, then the log book then the renewal in the post. I was fuming that they can sort out the fine first (knowing the car is owned by us as sent to us) but not issue the forms to Bl***y sorn it. So I wrote a very angry letter, and got a reply within a couple of days saying so sorry, forget all about it. Now your situation is slightly different but if you didn't get it in the post how can you renew it? So Id at least have a go with a letter but if push comes to shove, yes you should be aware when your tax runs out and try to sort it before you get the fine, but hey we all live and learn.

You don't need the renew notice to tax it, you get the form at the post office & just show you log book instead.

I know, but my point is that you could try to argue it, Im not saying that the OP is not silly for failing to notice his tax is out but I am saying DVLAs failure to send a renewal can add to anyone forgetting, it is easily done. If he sends a letter and DVLA wont budge then tough to the OP he has a fine so gotta pay it, I just think its always worth trying, even if you dont gain at least you've tried!

Just spoke to the DVLA and paid the fine. The lady said the letters are just a courtesy so it wouldn't be grounds for having the penalty cancelled.

What makes me sad is that
    1. Losing that £40 is probably going to stop me going on holiday now.
    2. I bought a new car a few years ago but no-one actually gives you the administration-related-to-a-car-lesson.. no-one told me about MOTs, no MOT needed in first few years, no-one told me about renewing road tax.

And of course, just like everything in this country, if you make an honest mistake you have to pay up for it.. there is no such thing as discretion anymore.

I know driving comes with responsibility but who actually teaches you those responsibilities?

If I used my car once a month I'd be thinking very hard whether I needed it at all.

Just pay the fine, you have no option, its pointless discussing it further.

My sister was fined and her car had been scrapped!!!they denied she notified them.

You could always take it upon yourself and not try and blame others for your mistake?

im sure if you could afford a new car, you should beable to afford the £40 fine, basically you deliberately forgot to tax your car as you thought you could get away using the renewal notice as an excuse to delay paying and even avoid the fine. only a few years ago they didnt send renewal notices, now i can see why they offer this free service as they mustve got fed up with people like yourself who deliberately forget when its due! i think you got off quite likely as if your car was parked on a public road without tax you wouldve had it towed to the compound and charged a storage fee per day as well as the hundreds to release the car ( and still have to pay the fine ) not to mention the inconvenience and taxi cost to the compound. your the sucker for giving them an excuse to fine you!!!

You should be aware of when your car tax runs out. Even if you don't receive a reminder it is your job to make sure the car is taxed.

What's not useful about that?

If you owned a fleet of cars then it could be understandable if you missed one when a reminder got lost. One vehicle's not too tricky to keep an eye on is it?
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Hi I got one of those a few months ago. I did write in but had had a sorn on it for being away and took it out of son's garage as mot and tax had run out. I went to garage to pay mot and by the time the garage put my credit card through post office was closed. Next day I had a fine. I wrote all this in and they cleared my fine. The squeaky wheel gets the oil I always say. I don't know if you will get away with it but why not try. What does it take to try and sit down and explain and a stamp. Good luck and I agree people were not very nice to you. We can all make mistakes you know. Yes I do forget people's birthdays all the time. Taffy
