Sending Passport Through The Post

  • They will only return your old cancelled/expired passport by 1st/2nd class mail...so if it gets lost, not a big deal unless you have valid visas in there. New passports are always sent by courier or by RM special delivery.

I've never received a passport by special delivery.

We've renewed two passports in the past year and both new ones came back by 1st class post.

I've never received a passport by special delivery.

Then you must have received it by courier? Otherwise you are being short-changed as the fee you pay includes return of new passport by a secure method...1st/2nd class post is not a secure method!!

New passports are sent by Special Delivery only to low-risk postcodes, all other areas get courier deliveries.
I work for the PO. The £8.75 covers the cost of special delivery to get your application to HMPO which alone is £6.22. HMPO will send your new passport back securely by courier and the old is cancelled and returned by 2nd class post. Any supporting documents such as birth/marriages certificates are also returned as standard by 2nd class post. The extra £3 charge will get them back securely. The slip for payment should have been retruned to you or destroyed (for security) as full payment is taken in branch. Hope that helps

Nope, they have all come by first class post (just like Mojisola). And worst of all is that it doesn't take a genius to work out what is in the envelope.

My memory's a bit hazy (even though it was only a few months ago) but I think my last passport was delivered by courier not RM, although no signature was required and they just put it through the letterbox. May be misremembering it though.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

So it's not secure, and is no different to being delivered by RM first class.

Because there is no signature required, and it is just posted through a letterbox. How does that differ from 1st class?

Either a postie posts it through a letterbox, or a courier does.

because the courier uses a tracked service. If you dont understand its fine,if you simply just see them as no different then you are wrong.
Unless the courier handles 60+ million passports a day I suppose
