what's your point?
Are you saying Recorded gave you peace of mind over 1st class?
I was a bit confused too.
I thought Special Delivery gave you a better service than Recorded.
The place we get our regular visas from say you must use RMSDE to send your documents (not sure what they do if you use normal post though).

Its not about better, they simply aren't comparable in any way0 -
First Class for me - it went to Durham and they confirmed receipt 2 days later by cashing my cheque. Being a Registered Tightwad, if it got lost, it wouldn't cost me any more to replace .......0

yeah thats fine.
So if it never arrives, then what?
you have cost of replacement and never know if someone has a passport in your name.
Its not about its value, its about the cost & hassle of it going missing
The funny thing is that when the passport office post your passport to you, they use normal first class mail.0 -

Not that I was that bothered in the first place.
Proof of posting will allow you to claim £20 from RM after 15 working days
Recorded is £50 but goes with the normal post, the only difference is that the postman will ask for a signature if he notices the recorded sticker, if he does not then it will go in your postbox
Special delivery goes by a different route through RM and is scanned at each mail centre0 -

Well who loses money if it doesn't arrive? The cost to them is negligible.
However unless its changed the passport office use a courier to deliver passports0 -

20 odd years ago my wife sent her passport off along with our marriage certificate, to have her name changed to her married name. Her passport arrived a few weeks later, but there was no sign of the old passport or the marriage certificate. Then one day when walking down the road, I noticed a brown envelope in the bushes that appeared to have something inside it. I picked it up, and to my horror it contained my wife's old passport and marriage certificate, all soaking wet and chewed by rats.
The post office weren't interested at all. There was no financial loss, just sentimental. But I suppose it could have been an omen, warning me that my wife wouldn't be able to keep her knickers on...lol0 -

And the new passport comes in an envelope with Passport Office written in big letters on it while the old passport gets sent in a plain brown envelope.0 -

They will only return your old cancelled/expired passport by 1st/2nd class mail...so if it gets lost, not a big deal unless you have valid visas in there. New passports are always sent by courier or by RM special delivery.0
