I must be luckier than the op. One very windy day at Tesco I was in my car, belted up and ready to leave when a rampant trolley came hurtling towards me at a terrific speed. There was no time to move, and I waited for the inevitable damage - BUT,out of nowhere raced a lad of about 15 and saved the day!
I half expected him to be wearing his underpants on the outside:D0 -
Thats a simple one, it annoys customers as not everyone has a £1 coin on them to use! Most supermarkets have thankfully got rid of this system, annoying customers obvioulsy isn't good for business. I know I have made do with a basket many times instead of a little trolley because I didn't have a £1 coin and I really can't be arsed to stand around at customer serivice to get some change. No room for those impulse buys in a basket
Anyway whats a £1 worth nowadays? I don't think its enough to persuade some people to return the trolley to the correct place
I wouldnt have a problem with it, surely yove been on holiday in france and youve had to find a euro coin for a trolley if you wanted a trolley,No Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
I concur - the number of times a customer is annoyed by having to rustle up a pound coin must FAR outweigh the number of times a stray trolley causes any trouble.
If the trolleys had the pound lock on them it would also stop trolleys being found rivers adn just dumped,No Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -

I agree that some system to encourage people to return trolleys to sensible places would be good, but the pound locks do annoy people, which is, I suspect why the supermarkets seem to be phasing them out. As pointed out above, the number of people who would chose a basket over a trolley would be detrimental to the store's business.
However, I still think the OP got quite a good offer of half the cost of repair. I had a whole stack of about 20 trolleys wheeled into the back of my car by a supermarket employee, who would have wandered off had I not spotted him doing it and called him back. In that case I expected them to make good damage caused by their employee. In this case I think that offering to pay for half the damages reflects the situation - neither the OP nor the store is specifically at fault, but it is a pain in the behind and the cost should be split between the two parties involved.0 -

We're talking Civil Law here, not Criminal, the Burden of proof is on the pursuer to prove "on the balance of probabilities" not "beyond reasonable doubt"Bought, not Brought0 -

This is easily solved by getting trolley tokens, you simply put it in your purse and use it over and over again. failing that, common knowledge that a to get a trolley means putting in a quid, would simply mean keeping a quid in your purse before going shopping, if thats too much for someone to do, get a basket.
I think the pound trolleys are an excellent idea for a number of reasons, from stray trolleys to abandoned trolleys, its not as if you dont get the quid back.:A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

the only trolleys I ever see running around car parks now are the large ones for toddlers etc. that are 'free' and are usually abandoned wherever the user feels like abndoning them .. even if they are right beside a trolley park.
When pay trolleys first came in they were either 10p or 50p (can't remember) but it was small enough that there were loads of kids running around the car park offerin to return your trolley for you. Unfortunately they got chased away because of fights related to their perceived 'territory' that often resulted in cars getting damaged.

Oh the good ole days, If I remember the kids would even offer to help load the shopping into your car, I would always let them keep the money for that. "what? you wanna load my shopping into my car, for 10p? Load away Son":A:dance:1+1+1=1:dance::A

I had the same problem when my car got broken into and at the time i worked for sainsburys, my car had 4 out of 5 windows smashed and some cds taken and prescription sunglasses taken, claim was about £400 but my employer wouldnt give me F**k A** as they said "its park at your own risk", a couple of hundred of pounds wouldnt have dented the profits of JS
Why should they have paid for it???The money, Dave...0
