You can read the study yourself here:It's such a simplistic statement that it's unlikely to be true on any useful level. Even if true, it isn't necessarily a causal relationship. Just spend what you want to spend/can afford and keep working on the relationship.

"we find evidence that marriage duration is inversely associated with spending on the engagement ring and wedding ceremony"
Still doesn't mean there's a directly causal relationship i.e. you cant necessarily guarantee that you'll stay married longer just by spending less on the wedding.
It's a bit like Cameron wanting all parents to be married because then they'll stay together - it may be that the kind of people who choose to get married, choose to stay together, rather than staying together because they're married.
Also, how strong was the evidence they found?!0 -
If you want to see why you can't simply assume that correlation = causation, have a read of http://www.tylervigen.com/. Some of them are fantastic.0

There is a lot of bitterness in this thread towards the OP. I missed this thread when it was new but have just read the whole thing.
To NaturalBornHustler looks like it was a great day - hope you both had a blast. House from the pic looks well done (not my taste but that's irrelevant).
Also I am not sure if it is stated anywhere, but I didn't see that the OP claimed to have personally spent the 40k of their own money, some could have been gifted for use on the wedding.YNWA
