I found this really interesting. I've been with my partner 20 years alwsys had seperate accounts. We always struggled until recently I got some inheritance and I paid off our mortgage things were then split each month so we had the same amount of cash to spend. He went straight out and bought a car so his spare money went on that each month.

this year he was made redundant went into administration so no pay since December.

if I hadn't had a secret saving *left over inheritance we would be struggling right now and I would be having sleepless nights. I dont feel bad about having it I because he wouldn't tell me what to spend it on but I know if this was his he would have had an extension or a new car!! So no money for these rubbish times.

I know he has no savings as I sort all the money out in the house including his accounts and when things go wrong have to find the money to sort it..

Does this make me a bad person - maybe but I'm looking after myself and daughter.....

I've been married so long that I've lost track! It's all 'ours' - I save it, spend it, and he's got no idea what's going on as long as he is warm, dry, fed and happy!!

DH has no interest in saving, so it's all in my name but I consider it ours. I've tried to get him to open a savings account in his name so he can access an emergency amount if I go under a bus, but he won't. If it gets to the stage where I'm completely filling my ISA allowance, I shall push to get him to put the rest in his name, but it will be an uphill battle.
