Why are non stick/bakeware/roasting tins such a no no?

I don't wash mine full stop, just a quick wipe over with a cloth. They tend to lose their non-stickedness if they're washed and even quicker if put in the DW

I've had problems with some of my sharp knives, the ones with their handles rivetted on. After a couple of washes they began to split across where the rivets are, presumably due to differential expansion of the materials in the heat. Still using them though. Also I don't put in anything non-stick or made of wood except for wooden spoons, they seem to cope OK.
    Anything else is fair game.
I often put in my scrubblies and washing up brushes to clean them up along with the draining rack and cutlery pot from the main sink, it is much better than doing them by hand!

I haven't used salt for years, it doesn't seem to make a difference with our water (quite soft).:T

    Interesting thread

I don't put crystal or wooden, or my Nan's bone-handled cutlery.

Agree that some plastic goes orange if in there with tomatoey things. Some lids semi-melt (only from cheese spread etc). I do however find some plastic and silicone things take on the smell of the tabs, and when they're used you can smell and sometimes take a detergent type tang :-(

One may deduce that this person probably lives on their own, my dear Watson.

    I didn't, but I do now :rotfl:
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

  • Hi,
Ive just got a new dishwasher and have some questions [total newbie - never owned or used one, ever] since I have nothing to compare with -

Ive bought all in one finish tablets.

*We have hard water. Instructions said fill up the reservoir inside with water and 2kg of dishwasher salt - the dishes seem to come out with little bits of salt on - is this ok/normal/bad for you?
I can taste salt on the dishes and see small bits on the glasses.

*The smell of detergent is really strong, is that normal?

*Everything seems squeaky and/or feels slightly slimy, even when dry - is that normal?

Just have no idea at all idea whats normal for a dishwasher!
    Thanks :)

Have you read your booklet withthe dishwasher and looked at the settings? It may be that yiu havent adjusted any since the original factory settings. Read the booklet first and familiarize yourself with the machine.
  • Well I tried to read them, they aren't the best instructions tbh. Im fairly sure I followed them all, selected the right water hardness etc.
Just wondering if the squeakiness/salt bits is normal?

What make of dishwasher is it? We've just bought our first dishwasher, a Beko, and it came with a water test strip to help with setting up the machine. Like you, we use the Finish tablets and don't seem to have the problems you're having.

I've never seen salt bits on anything that comes out of our machine, nor my sister's.

Did you spill any salt in the cavity of the machine?

Have you tried looking online for the instruction book as that may help. Can't help you with salt problem as we are soft area so don't have salt in the machine at all.
