Claire that is the real world post BR. You peeps need to know what you're doing. Having said that it's a damn sight better than incessant phone calls from creds

Post I understand that, it's just, as you have just pointed out, it is, in my opinion, the lesser of 2 evils. You didn't point that out in your first post, a newbie probably wouldnt have read this far down the thread.

I think Addo was joking BTW!

I agree entirely but the partying is clouding the reality lately. It sends out totally the wrong message to those whom we want to help

I disagree. It send out the message that there is life after bankruptcy. Pre bankruptcy you are merely existing not living. And I'm sure most would agree that having the major burden of debt over your head for months or even years, to the point that many people become ill (or worse) and then finally finding their way out, is indeed a reason to "party".

People come here looking for help and advice and the majority are already aware that bankruptcy is not an easy route or "the easy way out". But for someone who cannot yet see the light at the end of the tunnel I would imagine a lighthearted atmosphere with friendly people is the easiest place to turn to.

Claire,do you really believe you will be awash with cash after BR? The OR will allow you reasonable living expenses and that can be a battle sometimes. Any surplus over £100 pm and you start an IPA. There's a thread here somewhere which tells you exactly how much you'll pay. I don't mean to be the harbinger of doom but it's just not easy

I feel there's an air of flippancy amongst the newly BR and those about to, creeping in. This is serious stuff guys and gals and not to be taken lightly with:T and:rotfl: . It's really not funny. Don't even consider trying to put one over on the OR. There are no privacy laws where he's concerned, he can find out anything about you. If you do try it on and are found out, God help you, he'll be all over you like a rash! Those of you waiting for your OR interview may be in for a huge surprise. I fully understand the immediate elation of being debt free, I've been there. You come back to earth with a huge bump when you realise what your future life is going to be like. The car or washer breaks down, once you would have paid for the repair on a card. You aint got one! You apply for a job and are turned down and it can be for no other reason than BR. You don't even have a proper bank account so shopping without cash is difficult.

It's HUGE decision to make and no laughing matter. Make sure you take advice and dont give out the wrong signals to anyone lurking and thinking about the deed

I would agree entry with this comment. I am not proud of the fact I went bankrupt and to be honest if I could turn back time I would slap my past self in face!

There does seem to be a number of people who see BR as an easy way of writing off there credit debts , its not bottom line, its not just about 1 year and your free this stays with you for many years after. It restricts your life and occupation and ensures you find it very difficult if not impossible to get any form of credit for years after discharge.

When you first contact the OR they will gut your life open and find out about everything you own and how you came to be BR. Don’t think you can hide anything as you cannot and the penalties for trying are severe, if you own anything of value then be prepared to have it taken off you. You name is also listed on the internet and local papers.

As Posthinking said it’s not a decision that it taken lightly and making a decision such as going bankrupt based upon posts on a forum Is not the best course of action. You have to look at your own circumstances and please speak to your creditors, debt help lines and citizen advice before you do anything as these are the people who can help and offer the best advice.

Post I understand that. I know about IPA's. I know that they will take a percentage from me if there is a surplus. I know I cannot obtain any credit for the next 6 years. I can't anyway as my credit rating is so shot to pieces so that's not going to make any difference to me!

All I'm saying is, imagine you were a newbie here tonight. You've decided to look into bankruptcy but your not to sure what it entails so you have a look on the boards to try and find out (as most people lurk here for a while before posting). The first post they read is your OP on this thread. Can't you see what that might do to someone? Someone who cannot carry on as they are and are looking for alternatives? I'm telling you, if I were new and that was the first post I read I would not look any further as I would be to scared. that's all I'm saying.

BAAB, it's such a shame that people who used to offer advice/support are no longer here. The boards have been so quiet lately. Maybe now that things have settled down people might reconsider posting again? I hope so, I've really appreciated a lot of people's advice in the past that no longer post here and it's a shame (for them and for people needing good advice) they have made the decision not to post here anymore.
