Halifax CPD Markers

Options
I am wondering if Halifax have my account marked with credit policy decline marker. A few weeks ago I applied for the All in One card with them, I bank with Halifax and have had the Easycash Account for 6 years. I also have a current account since July 2011. That has an od facility of £300 on it, which I have never once touched.

After completing the application I hit the submit button and instantly, not even a second passed and it came back with a decline. However after that on the same day, I successfully applied for the MBNA card which I got at 16 months 0% BT and Super BT with 3 months 0% on purchases and a £2.4k start limit.

The thing that makes me wonder about the CPD marker is it really was an instant decline, you couldn't have even blinked before it came up. Also there has been no record of a search hit my file with any of the 3 CRA's.

So am I able to ask them if there is a marker on my account and if so do they have to tell me? Would I do this in writing or by ringing them?

Other than me slowly making the transition from poor credit accross to prime, I don't know why they would have a mark against me, so it is just a thought at this stage. I don't get though why if they have when they will give me the current account and the od facility?

Any one any ideas?

  • As you know CPD on your account depending on what product will give you an instant decline where your credit files won't of even been searched.

The way to do this is check your credit file to see if halifax made a search.

You go to someone in the bank sit down in front of the CPU with them and ask and they will point you if any what products you have the marker.

If you have markers for every product move banks as the chances of these disappearing are very slim if not none.

Ask them on the phone or in branch if they can offer you a credit card.
If they can't then ask if it says "Credit Policy Decline". There are reasons other than CPD. But CPD is the most common and it means they can't offer you a particular credit facility as a result of an assessment of the way your current account is run.

Do you use your Halifax current account as your main account? Is your salary paid there.

Do you generally spend the majority of the money in your current account?
  • i had a similar situation, impeccable record with halifax yet got a refusal online. i just phoned them and they did it on the phone, no problem.

My current account is my main account for everyday life and spending. I never spend all my money and for the last 20 months there has always been at least £300 in the account.

My money goes into my Easycash account, which I pay all the bills from. However every month I transfer what is mine for the month into my current account. So there is a regular transfer every month of around £500 into it.

I have always assumed that because everything is paid into the Easycash account with Halifax, they would be aware of that.

I have a feeling the Easycash is what is causing you the problems. I've heard this several times, as its a basic bank account they automatically assume your not credit worthy and don't even run a credit check. If you appeal an Underwriter may approve it.

I wonder if switching your income and bills to the other (prime?) Halifax account, and closing the Easycash, would be worthwhile?

Or maybe any CPD marker would follow you, since it's on the name rather than on the type of account held?

First port of call ought to be a branch visit, but you may have to sweet talk the advisor because not all are forthcoming with regard to 'switching the screen around'.

I had this issue with natwest, same setup basic acc for bills and normal for my own. I was told if you have any basic acc on your profile it declines all. I closed both and re-oppened and all fine.. shame I left the bank
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    OK........
I called into my branch and asked about the recent card application. I was advised that there are no CPD markers against my account, which was at least a positiive. They were keen to tell me that it looked like there was either an issue with my credit file, or I just did not fit their profile in relation to credit scoring.

I asked if they could maybe be a bit more specific as having checked all 3 of my reports, there was NO adverse information held on any of them. No missed or late payments, no defaults and no CCJ's. She spent a few minutes on the system looking at whatever she was looking at and said the exact reason for the decline was not there for her to see.

So she advised me to double check all my files and reapply in a couple of months, as their scoring process changes all the time and maybe then they will be able to offer me a card.

At least I have the conolation of knowing there are no markers against me. So I guess it is just a case of trying again in a few months. I still have my Vanquis card to close, as it isn't needed anymore (just not got round to it), so if I get that done it will show in a few months as a settled account that I have operated for nearly 3 years and that will look good I hope.

That's good news then at least you know now👍

I got to thinking about this again tonight after checking all my credit reports again as Halifax suggested and reading some other peoples experiences. I have come up with a theory, probably wrong but I think it has some mileage.

I am wondering if the "problem" is to do with Equifax? There are a couple of minor differences between the Equifax report and Experian and Noddle. None of it relates to payments or anything adverse, just dates.

I applied for the Halifax card on 13 Jan and immediately declined, according to Halifax yesterday, they used Experian & Equifax.

After having done the MBNA eligibility check I was quoted the 16 month card and £2.4k limit. I went ahead and was accepted. the card and pin are now ith me. They use Exp and CC.

I then decided to chance the Creation card, that was a decline. They use Equifax.

So out of 3 applied 2 used Equifax and resulted in Declined. 1 used Exp/CC and was accepted with £2.4k credit limit.

Could this be mere coincidence or could there be something in it? I also had my final default drop off my Experian report at the begining of January, could it be that if was still showing on the Equifax report, I don't think it was but maybe I was wrong?

Prior to Jan when ever I had run the Nationwide pre check, it came back as £500 limit and 19.9%. Tonight I decided to do their pre check again to see what was what. To my amazement it came back with 17.9% APR, the advertised rate and a £1800 limit. I didn't go ahead with it but on checking the use Experian.

So is it the Equifax report that stopped the Halifax card? I guess I will never know but it does seem strange that everytime they are involved in an application the computer says NO.

I might test the Nationwide tomorrow and follow the application through and see what happens. I would have thought with that offer that technically I should get accepted. If accepted I can close one of the other bad credit ones down, so not much to lose really and it will test my theory!

Incidentally neither the Halifax or Creation applications have shown up as searches on either Experian or CC as yet, so just the recent MBNA search.
