If you really want to do something then you will put your energies into finding a way to do it.

If you really don't want to do it, then you will find a 101 reasons not to.

You seem to be looking for us to say you are right not to go...

It's you that needs to live with the decision - not us.

I personally would try everything to get to the wedding especially if, as you say, the girls haven't yet seen their great-nan... but then again, that's just me and family is important to me.

Dog kennels for a night around my way (gatwick) is £11 a night which is near on £100 cheaper than what you have made it.

£150 for 5 days is very expensive.

Well it could be....... but on a more positive note it's also a chance to introduce the kids to other members of the family too as in a "normal" year Butlins would always win over Ireland.
I do agree that the OP seems to be looking for validation not to go as she thinks the rest of the family will be cross with her.

It's a trip to see a family member get married - one of the most important days of their life. An event they'll talk about for years to come... shame to miss sharing the joy.

It's a chance for the children to meet their great granny for the first time.

Only the OP can judge how important those things are to her.

Any wedding costing over £500 to attend is a wedding I wouldn't be going to unless I suddenly become rich. (And that's for a family member) I don't really like weddings, it's a lot of hanging about not doing very much. I wouldn't mind just going to the ceremony, wishing the happy couple well, giving a gift and then disappearing off home :o :rotfl:

Thankfully we don't have too many to attend, but some people can have a few invites every year and the costs do add up.

OP- if you really want to go, then maybe look into where you can get things a bit cheaper. If you don't want to, then don't go out of guilt. You just end up resenting it that way. Send apologies and ask to meet them and go through the photos when they get home. You could always still get a wedding gift as well.

Seems like the OP has decided anyway.
Good choice I can't think on anything more likely to put a damper on a wedding than guests who don't really want to be there.
I think the whole point was that the OP wanted to go to Butlins lol

It seems to me that you could view it in several ways:
    1. You are spending your money to go to someone else's event.
    2. You are going to have a holiday, which includes someone else's event.
    3. You will get an opportunity to meet people and see them all together on a perhaps unique occasion.

I know when my brother got married and I was best man, I commented in my speech that the reception was the first time that the members of the family there had ever been together in the same room.
